Just bought a Modern 5 ft. mower for my mom's 601 Ford. Have it all hooked up except the drive shaft. It has one of those plastic sleeve's around the drive shaft, and some kind of a round coller that goes to the PTO. The coller seem's to twist left- right, but I'll be darned if I figure out how it engages on the groove on the PTO shaft! I looked in the reciveing end of the shaft and see what I think is a piece that may retract to allow it to slide onto PTO shaft, and then set into groove on the shaft. But I cant seem to get this piece to move and since mower is new, I don't want to force it! The splines are matching. this much I do know. I know more about 4 whell drive truck's than I do about tractor's and mower's. So PLEASE HELP! BLESS ALL!

Thank Ya'll so much! The old mower had the obvious spring loaded pin that went in the groove. Wase'nt sure how this new stuff worked. Did'nt know to twist, turn, pull, or push. Kinda green to this, just want my 13 year old boy to drive a tractor before it's too late! We are both city folk, and I, for one don't like it ! GOD BLESS YA'LL

That plastic tube is to keep you from catching your bibs, sleeves, trousers, etc by the PTO or shaft. It probably also has a short chain to keep it in place at either end. If you look at the INSIDE of the coupler that slides over the PTO shaft of the tractor, you should see a pin going across it, although may be hard to see if you don't know what are looking for. That pin needs to lock inside the groove cut around the PTO shaft about mid-way down, and I'm not talking about the 6 spline grooves cut the length of the PTO shaft. I would be talking about the one that bisects them about mid-way down. Your coupler should have a twist lock on it's end that engages and disengages that pin into that groove. Twist it one way to unlock the pin, slide the coupler over the shaft, twist it the other way to engage the locking pin - then try to slide the coupler on and off (forward and backward) to make sure is locked on.

If you engage that PTO without having that coupler locked on, you're gonna have problems that could end with deadly consequences if anyone's near that shaft.

Should be able to pull back towards shaft on the collar while pushing it on the tractor shaft and then push it forward and pull back until it latches. Might need to spray some lube in it to loosen it up some.

Don't know how much they've changed over the years by our 5' Woods mower bush hog shaft has a spring-loaded pin that has to be pushed in to slip the shaft over the PTO. This is on our '59 Ford Diesel that just got crushed by an oak tree. If yours is the same, maybe it needs some lube to free up the pin that keeps the shaft in place on the PTO.

It has a coller like an air coulper on an air hose,it just pulls back to release it.

You are correct, some of mine are. Some of the ones I have from Deere are twist lock. Could be either.

Well, guy's I figured it out, thank's to ya'll. The POS plastic collar has a cam operated device that is supposed to move the key up/down that will allow drive shaft to slip on/off like normal. My question now is, Why would anyone make such a stupid ### device? To take a simple one motion, spring loaded pin, that's worked forever, and shroud it in a plastic collar that has to be twisted to activate to up/ down engageing pin is beyond me! The slightest bit of surface rust render's the plastic collar unoperable and only leads to frustation on the owner of said POS. I finally took the damn thing apart to expose the pin that I can actually touch! Sorry, guy's had to vent! Bless...
