Cub Cadet won't keep running

Greetings to all.

I have a Cub Cadet 122 made by IH around 1964 or so. It has a Kohler 12HP engine on it. It wasn"t being used for about 4 or 5 years and then about 6 months ago or so I got it back out and got it running. It ran and mowed fine for a while. Now when I fire it up, it"ll run but it feels like it"s lacking power. When you engage the mower, it"ll be too weak to mow and the RPM"s go way down. Once you turn the mower off, the RPM"s go back up but after a few minutes the engine will come close to stalling or just stall.
I have checked the fuel line, replaced the spark plug, ran it with 2-cycle oil, Marvel Mystery oil, cleaned the filter in the tank. No luck. Also, there seems to be an oil leak somewhere on top of the engine and it goes through oil really fast.
Ideas / help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you cleaned the fuel tank? I had a similar problem with an industrial MF and, finally, after MUCH frustration, took the "plumbing" to the sediment bowl out of the tank. I couldn't believe the trash in the tank. It was clogging everything before the fuel ever got near a filter.

Try replacing the air cleaner and see if that makes a difference.

Your loss of oil might be the result of a clogged breather tube.

There are no oil passages up to the head on that.
There is a crankcase vent on the side of the block, kind of behind the carburator. If you have a lot of blowby, it may be the source of your oil.

May have a ring sticking which would be a reason for the loss of power & resultant blowby. Or it might just be worn out and need rebuilding.
Rebuilds are not hard to do on these engines, oversize pistons are available.

clean and gap points to manufacture spec.
Points need lube where the cam rides.
A new plug does wonders even if the old plug looks good.
You can try to run it without the cap also to rule that out

Take the float bowl off the carb and spray the carb good with cleaner making sure to get into all the jets etc.

As for the oil leak, have you tightned the head bolts?
