I was recently shopping around and found some tractors that I'm interested in.
1. Scorpion
2. Century
3. Kama

I liked all of these units, especially when it concerns pricing.

I live in Pennsylvania and would like to purchase out of state to avoid sales tax. Currently, I seek a unit approximately 35-40 H.P. with front end loader and brush hog.

I would like to hear other tractor enthusiast viewpoints on these units, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

Older two-wheel drive tractors are cheap, simple, extremely durable, seem to run well, and don't depreciate. If you add a loader and the ground is soft, though, you are gonna get stuck until you learn what it can and can't do.

My MF35 diesel is working right along with a 58 hp Kubota and a 70 hp Valtra in my tenant's haying operation this summer. It runs just as well as the new ones.

Like leland said - I'd shy away from the yuppie tractors, most of them are for the guy who wants to THINK he has a tractor. Check with a local dealer to find out if your state has an "AG Use" tax exemption. You may be able to claim it as such and not pay sales tax. Technically, even if you buy it out of state, when it crosses the border, you still are subject to the sales tax. Come tax time next year, they will figure it all out. GO FORTH AND BUY A REAL TRACTOR!

I saw a promotion in the paper last week.. 50 HP JDeere, with FEL & a Rotary Mower... $17,500.00 w/ 0% financing for 60 months. I don't know if this was a local, or national sale... but it does make the no-names less appealing.....

WOW, if you can find the company who listed that, please, by all means, let me know.

I think Mother Deere is having a sale right now.

If you read my posts in implement alley, you surely would stay with Mother Deere. Those guys have their act together.

She is the only national company that is still in one piece.....all others have split and joined others or just quit.

But..... ..... ....I don't know if I can afford Mother Deere LOL.

I will probably invest about 16k on this, which has to include a tractor at least 35 HP, with a loader and brushhog.

I am currently looking into some information a member sent me, regarding the tractor sale near him.

I might tell them what I have to spend and see if they can alert me when they have these deals.

I know what you're saying.

Despite the fact that I got myself attached to Century tractors, I often thing "what if the company crashed?" How the heck will I get parts, and even if I can get parts, how much are they going to cost, if they have to come from oversees. Sheesh!

I appreciate everyone's feedback, its very kind.

You certainly have to consider that about future parts availability.

Think about it. You could have your $15k tractor dead in the field 4 or 5 years from now, for want of a $5 part that you can't get cause the mfgr went belly up, or that is overseas and our state dept is mad at them and you can't do business with them.

Something else I am hearing on here is some of these dealers that are a conglomeration of several old brands that consolidated aren't interested in servicing the old name brands, just the new conglomerate brand. Something to think about.

I don't give a flip about color per se. I want a good reliable tractor that I can keep running and I have 3 brands at my farm; of those 3, Deere has the best service.

Of those three I like the Century better. Consider looking at older machines like a Ford 2000, 3000, or 4000 (and others). There are great older machines out there that will cost you THOUSANDS less than the new tractors. My BIL bought a Korean yuppie tractor a couple of months ago (Kioti brand). Paid $23,000 for it - it is basically an overgrown lawn mower. MIGHT last him 6-7 years. He recently started to dig his basement with it. Got 1/2 way through and decided to go rent a Bobcat to finish. Only took 10 days sun-up to sun-down. Thought he was saving money, but cost more in the long run. Every tractor has it's own uses, just remember what your choice is designed to do and don't try to go beyond it. How many acres and what are your plans for it?

I see your point.

I did have an occasion to look at, and actually mess around with the Century brand. I was very impressed. They were letting one go (35 H.P.) complete with front loader and brushhog for less than 16k, which included local sales tax.

My useage? Mow about 8 acres of heavy thick fields, and use it to clear out a series of trails in the woods, install a septic system, light landscaping and possibly pull a Hayride with it.

I wanted something not to big, but not to small either. I heavily consider the weight ratio, so that the unit can dig, while putting it's own weight behind it.

I hear you about Kioti, I glanced at them too.

I've been lurking a lot of forums, to see what the scoop was on Century. To be honest, I haven't heard a bad thing yet, and the stats are better than the competetors.

We used to have a Ford 1500, which as you know, it was a great little 20 HP diesel 4X4 tractor.

That thing would mow fields that were 6 foot high without struggle.

I appreciate the information.

What they say is true, they just don't build them like they used to.

those smaller tractors have poor castings I saw one broke in half they do not hold up to the abuse a back hoe or heavy loader work puts on them. be money ahead and look for a 3010 or 20 or a D-14 allis more for the money
