I have lost all hydraulics to the rear remotes. Steering column gets very hot and the steering and three point is very jerky at low idle. I have changed the filter and oil-no change. Can anyone give me some input. I have put gauges on the remotes-saw no pressure. Thanks.

Has anyone ever dumped oil in that didn't say "suitable for wet clutches" on the container?

If the steering column is getting real hot,I would venture a guess that it has an internal leak. This will cause the oil to overheat, due to a bypass situation, and a combination of the oil bypassing, and overheating will cause other hydraulic function problems. 2840"s are known for hyd. problems.Cut sealing rings, cracked internal hydraulic lines, steering valve leaks, pto valve problems all will give the same symptoms that you describe.

I have a 2840 that did the samething.... I had to have the front pump rebuilt and I had a new pump put in the transmission. It works like new again. The first thing I would do is change the oil and clean the filter screen out. If that does not do anything I would start looking at the front pump. How many hours on it ??? Our had 5100 hours when it started giving troubles. It sounds like your 2840 is starving for oil...that's why it is jerky. One more thing..is your oil cooler clean ??? If they get a lot of dirt on them they will not cool the oil good. Good luck... PJB

I have a JD 2440, and I think the hydraulics should be similar to yours. There are two filters to check, and possibly change. One is the cartridge type filter, that you probably changed, and the other is a transmission filter. It is located in the same area, I forget if you have to remove anything else to get to it, but you need to drain your fluid first. The filter is about 1" in diameter, and about 10"-12" long. It has black ends and has a mesh screen to filter the fluid.

Did the first filter you changed have any metal particles in it?

Hope this helps!
