I have a 71 ford 2000. When I use the tractor for 30 minutes mowing it started to shut down. At first I thought it was fuel problem, I cleamed all fuel filter, carborator and gas tank. Then It shut down again, this time It wouldn't start after a day of setting. I had another 12 volt coil so I put it on and it fired right up. I mowed again and about 30 minutes it started shutting down again. Could it be the voltage regulator burning my coil up. What should be the voltage going to the coil?

Unless you are certain that this is an ignition problem, you may want to suspect a vapor lock in the fuel system. When it shuts down immediately check for bubbles in the filter bowl.As an alternative try topping of the gas tank.A bit more head pressure will raise the vapor flash point somewhat.I have had to insulate between the engine and gas tank to overcome a similar problem on a couple of Fords.

Tony,
FIRST thing to do is to check whether it is the ignition system at fault. Check for spark immediately after it shuts down on you. Work from there.
If you have a twelve volt coil, then it should be fed with 12 volts.

Set your points to specs

A rough setting would be the width of a bussiness card out of your wallet

There should be two wires on the + side of the coil. One from the start relay providing 12 volts to the coil when cranking. The other comes from the ignition switch and contains a resistor buried in the harness. Should provide about 6 volts. The resistor may be on the way out.

Rick, My tractor shows 12 volts from starter relay to the coil when cranking and 12 volts form the other wire coming back from the switch going to coil. So with this 1971 ford 2000 with a 12 volt coil it should be 6 volts from the switch wire, right. If this is right is it hard to find the resitor or can I buy another and but it in the line at some other place. Thanks for information.
