Friday was a bad day--three bad accidents.

Last Friday, my small town saw two bad tractor accidents. First was my high school chemistry teacher (mid-fifties), was baling squares, somehow fell off tractor while in motion, tractor ran him over in the pelvic region, crushed his pelvis and damaged some internal organs as well. He is in stable condition in local hospital, but is not out of the woods yet. Second, an ex-classmate (31 or so)of mine (I graduated in a class of 36 people, so we knew each other pretty well) was riding on a tractor fender, driver hit a dead furrow and the rider fell off, was run over by tractor. Both were large, diesel tractors, the first a JD 4020, other I don't know make/model.
It serves as a reminder that you only have to lapse in concentration for a second and your life could be either over or changed forever.

In addition to these two accidents, there was also a young logger killed by a falling tree in my town. I am on the volunteer fire/rescue squad, and we had to run about a mile back into the woods to get to this young fella (probably early 20s), he was conscious but in an awful lot of pain. I held his hand as we carried him out, assuring him that he would be allright if he just hangs on. It's not the first fatality I have been a part of, but him being so young and the physical challenge of getting to him and getting him out of the woods to the helicopter...it really made an impression on me. I was also one of the first responders on the scene for my history teacher's accident, loaded him onto another helicopter, so that added to the stress of the day. My ex-classmate's accident actually happened just south of here, not in our department territory.

Seems like a lot of bad things happening all in one day...especially in a town of about 500 people.

Would appreciate your prayers for the families of my friends. Thanks

Brian, my wife was seriously injured in a turn-over wreck with her pickup on May 2. She is doing pretty good, but still has a ways to go. One thing that quickly became apparent was the difference between emergency workers in a big city, and the ones in a small town like ours. Often there is an emotional tie to the victim and that wears heavy on the emergency workers.

Things like that always seem to happen in groups. Nothing will happen for a while then bam bam bam. Seems to go in groups. Three fires then three car accidents, Three medical calls. Sorry to hear about your friends. Its always hard when you know the person, you just do what you can.

Prayers to them...and also to you Brian!

My own experience is it's not the isolated bad calls that get to people...it's when we see a series of them that they start to gnaw at you.

Been there, done that...make sure you find someone you're comfortable talking with if they seem to be bothering you more than usual!

Matt

Sorry about your friends. It is so true that an accident on a tractor takes just a split second. You can drive one for 50 years and kill yourself in one split second. We just don't realize the danger lurking. Gotta watch out for trains too.

Sorry to hear about the bad events in your community.

Makes me real glad to have the EMT first responders in a small town. In NW Iowa as I am sure in your community they are volunteer and need all the support they can get.

Remember few year back had a friend that wanted a tractor hauled from a junk yard for a rollover exercise. I was willing to haul for him until I found the JY was going to send a 1155 massey. (I only have a 3/4 PU with a gooseneck)

Wound up rolling a tractor I had around as a parts donor. Friend was real suprised that I was willing to use this tractor for that. I told him that I was more than willing to help because it might be me the next time.

Take care and keep yor chin up.
