Hopefully, someone may recognize this problem and provide some good advice. I have a '88 Ford F150 with the Mazda 5-Speed which is difficult at times to shift into first gear. At other times, it works perfectly. When I try to shift, it does not grind, it just will not go into the engaged position. If I turn off the engine, it will shift perfectly. When it won't shift, I push forward on the shifter and I can hear the drive shaft "clunk" as though it is trying to turn. It seems as though the transmission is not stopping for the shift, even though the clutch is depressed. It does seem to be more of a problem in hot weather. Please help! At long stop lights, I have to leave it in gear so I can go. My foot is getting tired! If I shift to first gear just before I stop, about 2 MPH, it works perfectly. Thanks to all for your response.

Thanks to all who responded. I am going to open the dust cover and try bleeding the slave cylinder first. Then give a visual inspection to see if anything looks out of adjustment. Hopefully, it will be something I can repair without removing the transmission.

A few possibilities: loose transmission mounting bolts, uneven cluth pressure plate finger heights, pilot bearing needs replaced, clutch operating arm not being fully depressed(air in master cylinder or slave cylinder or 1 cylinder bad),simply needs adjustment, bad clutch disk(lining coming loose).

What do you recommend .. the 600 4 cylinder or the 60's model 2000's with the 3 cylinder gas?

It is not disingaging the clutch all the way so there is some drag on the clutch and is turning the transmission just enough that it wont go into 1st gear inwhich is hard on 1st gear sncyronizer. When you shut the truck off nothing is turning and pops right into gear. Its probably hydraulic clucth related.Just my .02

On these fords the firewall where the clutch master cylinder is mounted would crack and break.Ford made a repair kit for this. When you depress the clutch pedal the firewall will move instead of the clutch releasing.

You said it! This isn't something to neglect for long either. Let it go, and then the synchro's will soon follow..... I'd check the clutch oil level first. Add some and bleed if necessary. It could also be worn internals in the clutch/pressure plate. I know from experience that a 300 mile trip with no clutch, with 20 miles through the city isn't really much fun. Thankfully it was early on a Saturday morning, and traffic wasn't bad, and no cops around..... I can hear it now....No officer..... I didn't run that stop sign.....
Definitely want to fix this soon.

Two questions. Have you checked the fluid level for the hydraulic clutch, and have you tried slipping it into 2nd before putting it in 1st? I have found that to be helpful with my Rangers.
