Diesel engine, bent valve?

Hi guys. Sorry this is a bit long winded. I am trying to help my buddy fix his deutz allis 5230 with a Toyosha diesel engine.
The tractor ground to a halt about a year ago with massive loss of power. Upon removal of the valve cover we found two pushrods were broken and a two of the caps holding the rocker shaft down were broken. we replaced the pushrods and caps last weekend, did the valve clearances. To turn the engine over we stuck it in high gear, removed glow plugs and heaved on the jacked up back wheel. Something however was not right. The engine would turn over a bit then would not turn over any more coming to an abrupt stop. It seemed as though one of the valve springs was fully compressed with the coils pressed against each other so the engine couldn't turn over any more. If we back the wheel off in teh otehr direction the valve would suddenly pop out with a loud click. Could this be a bent valve? Wouldn't a bent valve slowly jam in the guide not come to an abrupt stop? If I loosen the clearance adjusters the engine turns over OK. If a valve stuck could the piston actually hit the valve? Could the valve timing have changed and the piston hit the valve? We tried to start the engine it turned over and fired but made a horrible noise, One of the rocker shaft caps broke, the pushrods were OK this time. What does it all mean? We'll pull the head off in the next few days but any ideas?

I had a Wuekusha diesel do that once and it turned out to be carbon build up . The carbon broke loose and two blocked the piston. It wouldn't turn over. I pulled the head and found the problem, cleaned everything up and it's running today. PK

In a diesel the combustion chamber is much smaller than a gas engine and the pistons can very easily hit the valves if your not careful.Sounds like something worked its way loose and is stuck between the valve and the seat.Either way you will have to pull your head and Im sure your trouble will then be seen.

It sure sounds like the camshaft drive gears or chain may have somehow slipped out of time.

Well found the problem! the bolt holding the camshaft gear on came loose and actually knocked a hole in the timing cover and escaped. The keyway on the end of the camshaft disintergrated and the key fell out. We found the key!. Parts for these Deutz Allis tractors seem rarer than rocking horse sh*t.

If the camshaft is that far out of time I don't think it would fire at all!
