As long as we were on the pickup subject I have a question for some of you owners of the Ford F 150 with the small V8 (4.6) How has that motor worked out for you in terms of long lasting and mileage? I have a 04 with 4wd drive and the 3.31 rear end, I can hit 19 mpg on the highway, less in the city, sometimes a lot less. I just wonder how many miles I can get out of the motor and any problems that this engine can develop. Always have had six cyl, up until now. Thanks for any input.

The 4.6 is one of the most durable engines Ford has put out. The PU version of the engine has never had the bad valve seals and cracked intake manifold problems that the car version suffered from for almost ten years. Other then the complaints of low power they seem to be a good 200K engine with normal maintenance.

Morning Short,I bought a 2000 F-150 4x4 with the 4.6 about 2-years ago.It had 63,000 mi.on it then,87,000 mi. now.It has a 3.55 gear ratio and auto-trans.I have gotten as much as 20.1 mpg.if I drive 55-60 on the hwy. Usually 19 mpg.I'm very satisfied with this truck and I've talked with a lot of guys who say these engines are good for 300,000 mi.Like John says, this truck is turning out to be the best one I've owned.I've wondered about buying a programmer but have'nt talked with anyone who can tell me if they are worth the money or not.I'm also afraid it may shorten the life of the engine. Would like to know about this from someone other than the guys who sell them. Kenny

Short, My new style 97 (built in June of 96} Ford F-150 SC 4.6 V8 Auto,4x4,3.55 gears, long bed. Still pulls a trailer very well, Runs like a Bat out of Hades, Gets high 14s to low 16s depending on how crappy the gasoline is.
I bought this truck when it was 1 yr old in June of 97. It had 12,500 miles on it. It was a program truck that the original owner opted to get out early). She turned 280,000 last weekend. I only run Chevron Delo 400 15x40 oil too.
No engine work except a set of coil packs, plugs and wired at 67K miles. A second set of plugs and wires at 220k. Rearend gurnaded @ 217k.
Absolutly this has been the best pickup I have ever owned! ! ! ! Only thing I would change on next pickup is I will go DSL instead of gas.
Later,
John A.
