Oh boy, I hate to start a "what you call it in your part of the country" but. Several times, today isn't the first, I have seen the statment that a tractor will only run with the choke open. To me choke open is the normal running condition. Choke closed is the choking condition. Anyone that has overhauled a carburator would know what i mean. Now "choke on" could mean to choke. Am I missing something here or is my old mind playing tricks on me again?

On anything with a mikuni carb (snowmobiles, motorcycles, ultralights, who knows what else?) theres no choke but an "enrichment circuit" which you actually open when you flip the "choke" lever...
Just to confuse things because the world is all about exceptions.

sorry for my mea culpa,

I thought that this list was to help people, not make fun of them.

I do not work on this tractor but since my husband in in Iraq, it falls to me to try to get everything done. Its funny that you don't give any useful suggestions just make fun.

Ha Ha

Please thank your husband for me in reply to Kathi Zysk, 06-20-2005 16:55:05
I appreciate his sacrifices, and those of your family.

And as I often tell folks, be careful on or around that tractor. Never get too comfortable that you (anyone) takes one for granted, or underestimates the lightest, lowest HP one.

Sincerely, Mark

If you'll get down off your high horses for a few minutes, and stop being offended, maybe you would see that we sometimes compare regional and cultural names for things around here. Just look down a few posts and you"ll see some guys talking about the difference between haybines, drapers, and swathers. Not everything on here is a matter of life and death. Sometimes we're just learning some trivial stuff. Lighten up. Jim.

Just think of it this way now you know and you have learned some thing more. I'm an old man that thinks just for someone to get there drivers liense they should have to know how to check all fluids in a car and also be able to change a tire. Feel free to keep asking questions we all had to learn at some point and most of us have had people tell us in not that kind of a way along to way. Please forgive if you where offended

So sorry Kathi. I did not mean to make fun, only to correct a mistake that many others have made. I am probably just making things worse by this message, but I hope not. Bob did such a great job of addressing your problem, I did not even atempt to add my 2 cents. Again, please forgive me for any discomfort I caused, Kenny

Yep I see that all the time. Choke on or closed is when you are chokeing the engine/carb. Choke off or open is when its in the normal run position. A lot of people do get that mixed up and it can be hard for us to help them because of that.

A clutch is either engaged or disengaged. When it is engaged, the power is tranferred from one shaft to another. When disengaged, the two shafts are not connected.
Your foot engages the clutch pedal and depresses it to disengage the clutch, unless it's a Model T Ford.

For as long as I have been driveing released means you are going, or if its a pedel type the pedel is up. Drepressed or down means you are not going under engine power. But on them old JDs its forward and back

Would sure hate to hand prop a plane for them. "off and open" "on and closed" would start engine at full throttle. Guess no one hand props any more.
