Do tractors have a duty cycle? Is there a maximum amount of time you can work them hard before you have to let them cool down and "rest"?
Does the duty cycle shorten as tractors age?

Duty cycle to me means some thing else. Not that it runs 24 hours a day, but what percent of full power it is operating at. Since the load varies, there is no way it would be at 100 percent for more that a minute or two. On a generator or pump maybe. I was told that stationary engines and that might include tractor engines, were tested to find max HP, then rated at 80 percent of this for continous duty. I once saw an ad for Case 830 rated this way for power unit operation. Would hate to run any of mine at full power (absolute full power) vary long.

The last two tractors i bought new, it said exactly what your post said in the owners manuals. Do NOT pull MORE than 80% of full rated pto power out of the pto for continues duty.

In other words, if on a pump or pto gen set, do not pull more than 80% rated pto power out of the pto for any length of time.

For tillage ect.. there is no duty cycle as long as your not over loading the tractor in the first place.

There are no duty cycles for tractors.

A friend and his dad used to trade off running their 5010 and kept it running 24 hours several days on end before shutting it off to even check the oil. They knew about how much it used and would add each time it was fueled, which was with engine running.

With my 1070 Case I would carry dinner and supper in the tractor with me and would only stop for fuel, to move fields, or after I had ran about 14 hours.

Nope, no duty cycle for tractors, only for the operators.

I worked for a company we operated 6 2505 terra gators and ran them 6 1/2 days a week non stop around the clock and they kept chugging along knifing poop into farm fields and changed the oil every 500 hours or so.

I"m no expert on this subject, but with proper fluid, filter, hose and belt care and as long as someone makes overhaul kits and repair parts they are like a timex= they"ll take a licken and keep on ticken. I"ve seen some 4020 JD"S AND 806 IH"s wear out more than one operator. I"m not so sure about the newer models.

100%
Years ago with small tractors and big farms it was real common to switch drivers and run tractors around the clock. When I was a kid we rarely worked at night but many times in rush season dad and I would trade off going to lunch and keep the tractor rolling. And oh, I've peed over the fender lots of times. A tractor don't need a rest but sometimes the man does.

Most farm tractors will work hard as long as you want to run them. They are designed and built to runat full power, and if kept serviced willkeeep it up for many years. Now, I don't know if I would work an 60-7- yearold tractor hard day in and day out. Mainly because stuff does wear outy and get weaker with wear and age.

The machine maybe able to run 23.5 hrs of the day. However every manufacture says 80% of max power continuos with 20% reserve for tough spots and hills. You can tell the machinery that was operated at 100%, turned up or worse yet lugged down. Before it's time, the beat up/worn junk is then sold at consignment sales. And the owner/operator then has the nerve to yap off complaining the machine isn't durable.

Mike Gassers in the days of old suffered short lives due to unburned fuel from carburetor mixture control, points ignition and that dirty abrasive deposit making leaded gasoline. I dare say a fuel injected computer controlled electronic ignition unleaded gasser could hold it's own today against some diesels in some applications.

Best example is tractors running irrigation pumps or generators- PTO speed, 24/7, only shut down long enough to change oil. One reason diesels became popular (aside from economy) is the fact that cylinder lubrication is partly done by the fuel, adding greatly to longevity.
