Blowby is usually the amount of compression and/burned gases that are passing by the piston rings into the crank case and is not available to push the piston down the cylinder with quite as much force, therefore resulting in a reduction in the amount of twisting force exerted to the power train of the machine which in this case would be the pulling wheels of the tractor and/or the pto shaft.

At my age, "blowby" is what traffic does past me on the highway.

Andrew, Usually the term "blow-by" refers to the compression lost around the rings in the cylinder. This lost compression goes in the crankcase. It's most noticed when engine is running with oil fill cap off,or dipstick removed. It considered by a lot of folks to be an indicator of the condition of the engine, meaning a rebuild is in the forseeable future of the engine. Not necessarily the imediate future, depends on how bad it is.On car engines,it's usually routed via a pcv valve(positive crankcase ventilation),back into the intake to be burned again. However,on a lot of tractors,it's discharged ,throgh a downtube, into the atmosphere.Hope this helps.

THanks for the great explanation Tim B.
Is that discharge tube you're talking about also called the "stink tube". On my Ford 550, there is a tube coming off the valve head cover which then goes downward. Is this the stinktube?

Probably; on older cars before the advent of PCV valves the vapors that built up in the crakcase from heat and blowby were exhausted thru a "road draft" tube that hung down from the top of the crankcase. As the car moved down the road a slight vacumn was created in the pipe by the air passing over the beveled end of the tube which caused it to suck the gasses out to the atmosphere.

Hi Tim, Now that is a very good explanation! That is the kind of information that makes it easy to understand and how to use it.
