I have a crank start on my F12 Farmall and it is almost impossible to crank start--what could be the problem?

I'm reading and learning what you are saying about the F-12. The one I have with the Waukesha has the lever on the left side by operators foot. The rod controls and turns the dial on the end of the mag. Is that the only on and off there is for this tracto?. and I have no decals saying which is on or off so I guess I will know when I have spark, Thanks Migraine

If you are retarding the spark and it is still hard to start and the mag is putting out a good
spark, the problem could be in the fuel pump.
A few years back I had the same problem, and finally came to the conclussion that the diaphram
in the fuel pump was bad. Good luck finding a diaphram for it. I made a diaphram from a plastic
purex jug. It works just fine and solved my problem. Might give it a try if fuel is the problem.

Are you retarding the mag by about a third when trying to start? I had the nicest little F-14 new sleeves, pistons hot hot mag but unless you retarded that thing a little you would crank yourself into exhaustion. Be careful over choking as that fuel pump can help you flood it quickly. If you think it is flooded; turn off the fuel, drain the carb and crank or wait until the cylenders are dry and start again. THe biggest problem I've had with 12s and 14s though is the retarded mag at start up.

buy and owners manual, do a search here or someone like binder books will have one for cheap money. WELL WORTH IT.

The advance retard lever is next to the operators right foot (with stock mags). It conects to a lever on the mag, BE VERY CAREFUL!!!!! A backfire can reverse the crank and break wrist, forearm ect..... I wear a football pad on my arm and keep you thumb on the same side as the crank. moving the lever clockwise advances the timing, counter retards. I start mine about halfway to a little advanced.

Does your F-12 start easier when it is cold? Ours would start good when it was cold. Go out and work a field all morning and park it in the shade when you come in for dinner. But after dinner it would not start up very good. It may be the retard set up.
