Used to raise about 5 acres of sweet corn. Had 4 box traps baited with hostess ho-ho's & similar sweet yukky stuff. If the traps had sweet geuy stuff sweeter than the corn, you got em. Groundhogs liked apples (one trap got that bait). Groundhog eats a few ears; A coon will strip the whole field. Careful not to plant super sweet beside regular sweet or it'l all be super flat. Baited traps in evening; usually needed 3 shells early next morning.

Darn. I plated the four sweet corn varieties in two rows each for a total of 8 rows together in one patch. May as well let the coons have it. I did know enough to plant the ornamental corn a couple of hundred feet away and down wind of the sweet corn. In this politically correct age we can't call it Indian Corn anymore. I have the live trap set outside the turkey run at the moment, baited with peanut butter, jam and marshmallows. Caught 7 of my own turkeys in 8 days. It appears the old fashoned bronze turkey can fly over fences a white hybred turkey can't.

You might need 4 rows of each variety to get good pollination. Don't give up yet, if the maturities are different, it might work out okay.

Indian corn, Mandan Bride, in particular, makes the best tasting corn meal. IMHO.

Start live trapping and shooting coons as soon as you care to. You must check your trap every morning. There are only so many coons in your area and thinning them out will help. Otherwise you can put up three strands of electric fence. 3", 6" and 36" off the ground. The first two are for the coons, the third one is for the deer.

If you can stand to trim off the wormy tips, you will not need to spray.
