Just curious I have heard a few John Deere poppers but am not a Pro. Which of the two clynider engines give the best poppin noise and are there any tricks owners do to make them sound better. I have never read about this anywhere and was just curious.

The G has the best "pop" when considering idle, drive, and under load. The D and the larger R, 80, 820, and 830 have a better sound under load. The GP and the G have a better sound when at idle. The A and B have a better sound when driving without a load.

There is a 49 D here local that pulls at the local antique events that has a 4 inch chrome curlout straight stack that hammers down the track and lugs like nobodies buiseness. The whole crowd watches every time just because of the sound it is emitting.Next in line is a FINELY tuned G John Deere.

You can't beat the deep, oh-so-slow chug-aa---CHUG-a--chug-aa---CHUG of a D under load.

Gotta be a "B". My neighbor (older fellow) still uses one and goes up an down our road a lot. I can hear him a mile away.

I really like the sound of a popper that is not quite tuned right and does that hit & miss impression. Or a popper that is tuned EXTREMELY well and will run reeaaall slow will also do the hit & miss sound.

Always figured the flywheel weight caused or affected that "hit hold back hold back hit hiss hiss" rhythm. A late A does that more than a 60 even tho they have about same engine & rpm. My 60 with a 3 in dia 2 ft long straight pipe has a pretty good sound. The 620's & 30's reved a couple hundred rpm faster & lost a little bit of the slow talking John sound.

The two cylinder in that came in Dad's 440 crawlers sounds pretty good to me. It really sounds good through a straight pipe when she's pulled way down to low idle. The only problem is if you wind her on up with the straight pipe you can't hear yourself think so you've got to put the muffler back on if you want to get any work done.

Hard to say after all popping is in the ear of the beholder.
