Got 80 acreas of CLEAN wheat in central Ohio. Thinking about what do do with the straw - plow it or bale it?
A neighbor has offered $0.35 (35 cents) per bale. He would bale it and haul it away. Or should I buy a baler and do it myself and try to sell myself?
I do not own a baler and do not have a place to store it. Where are good places to sell straw - any leads? How many bales can I expect per acre? If I sell it myself, what could I get?
Thanks!

Where at here in central, Ohio? I am Here in West Central Ohio and have had wheat straw in the barn here for years and cannot even give it away, I am going to have to haul it back out to the field and plow it under, It was baled but has been in so long the strings have gone bad.

You do not know where to sell it, you do not have a place to store it. If it only makes 2000 ( I am thinking closer to 3000) bales that is $700 and all you have to do is reach out and take the check. People may be paying $4-$5 a bale but I bet they aint coming out to the field and picking it up for that. If I were going to plow or disc or even no till I would rather have the extra money to spend on fertilizer than fight thick straw on the ground. With what info you provided I sure wouldn't buy a baler just for that. I think I would accept' I think it is close enough to be fair being a neighbor and all

I don't know what kind of plow you have or are using, but we are raising 80 bu/acre wheat and don't have any trouble plowing it down. Not only is the fertilizer a good thing, the organic matter is also welcome. Ask Iowa's corn king Francis Childs.

I don't know what the development situation is in central Ohio, nor the rules, regs and enforcement regarding erosion control at work sites, but around here contractors by bales by the hundreds and thousands for erosion control (which, by the way, does not really work so well unless someone puts a lot of time and effort into setting up the bales). Straw is better than hay because it does not have all the grass and weed seeds to screw up the new lawns.

I think I always figure about 30-40 bales per acre depending on how it is cut and how heavy it is. those are nice tight bales too. so i would expect 2500-3000 bales for 80 acres. personally the only thing i hate bailing worse than straw is clover that has been rained on... just nasty dirty stuff. also since you dont have a bailer, wagons?, or a place to store it you will be far better off to have your neighbor bale it for .35 a bale. my $.02

It's worth more than $.35/bale as fertilizer. I would expect at least $.50/bale and better yet $.60/bale. Good baler's can be bought very reasonable, but one must do some looking. I have not baled much, because similar to your circumstances, there are storage/marketing/ delivery concerns. If I could sale it for $2.00/bale loaded in the field, all would be sold. Since this doesn't happen, we bale a few for our own use, and plow the remainder down. If the neighbor will return the straw later as manure, then yes, I would sell it for $.35/bale.

..I don't know... whats that saying about a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the tree.

35 cents may sound cheap compared to 2,3,5 dollars but... who's gonna bale it, who's gonna handle it (are they actually going to show up to help), where ya gonna store it, any room in your local market for it?

If your not ok with 35 cents/bale, maybe try working with the neighbour for a year or 2, to see what it takes a far as the machinery, labour, storage and selling goes. Hound

I'm with Van on this one.
In my-neck-o-the-woods, straw goes for $4 to $5 a bale. At that price I've considered planting winter wheat instead of fooling with hay. Just mow, rake and bale for twice the profit!!! I have planted it in October, just to hold the ground until I can put out seed in the spring. After cutting it so the place doesn't look abandoned, it comes right back - a guy may be able to get more than one cutting - any wheat farmers out there than can enlighten us??
The market is quite diverse - gardeners, landscaping companies, etc. I've never seen a surplus around here...

Here in upstate NY a lot of farmers plant rye in the fall and cut it when it is just turning but still greenish ted it out so it bleaches in the sun for a few days and bale it.
With wheat the grain pays the costs and the straw is the profit.

In my area (KS) wheat straw is advertised for $2.00 a bale, wish I could find some of those people paying $5.00 a bale. With him doing all the labor and providing the equipment & fuel .35 is about right (or a little low) if straw is also 2.00 a bale in Ohio. If you know he's going to get to it and do a decent job (plus he is your neighbor) it's not to far out of line. Getting it put up in small squares is a PIA unless you have the help to get it done.

As for buying a baler, you'll be money ahead letting it lay in the field for only 80 acres.

What a good neighbor you have, .35 a bale? It"s only worth about $5.00 a bale here to all the horsey people. I would get a baler or hire it done on halfs and make a little extra money for myself.

I"m with van on this one, I don"t use straw for my horses because of the price. If I were you I"d find a farm or two and contract it. I know things are different here in the east but you should be able to find farms that will take all you can mow for a fair price. I would let your neighbor take it for this year until you lined up some customers and then go from there. You should be able to get 2.50- 3.00 all day long
