I got an old horse drawn manure spreader that I finally had some time to use. Problem was I broke one of the links for the bars that draw the manure to the beaters when I was trying to loosen up all the rusted drive pulleys.
So to TSC I went, natch they did'nt have the size I needed. That's okay 'cause I did'nt want to buy 10 feet of chain to replace one link.
So what to do? I ended up wrapping some heavy wire through the links and twisting it with some channel locks to tighten it. Then I put a hose clamp on and tightened it up the rest of the way. Well it held! I was pretty darn proud of myself. I could imagine Roger Welsch standing there giving an approving nod. Got me to thinking, what kind of ingenious solutions to equipment problems have you guys come up with? I remember my grandfather had some pretty neat things he cobbled up around the farm.

My father would "fix" things in this manner, to save money. Unfortunately when it came to spreading manure, we would have to pitch it on, and after it broke during spreading, had to pitch it off. I would rather buy 50 ft of "gold" chain before I would suffer thru this ideology again!

You can use that stuff for baling too!? And I thought it was just for keeping the muffler on your car!

It is a little different, but my grandpa had a 6 gallon ice cream freezer with a hand crank (like the ones people use hit and miss engines with). To turn the crank, it would absolutely wear 3 or 4 folks out. They found a big pulley and v-belt, would jack a small dump truck up and run the belt between the rear wheels in granny low. When the truck bogged down and quit, it was time to eat ice cream. There was times they would make it 3 times in an afternoon so many people would show up.
