Log splitter engine

I have a log splitter with a briggs and straton engine, 5 HP 206 cc, that doesn't seem to have the compression to create enough vacuum to suck the gas out of the carb. Its hard starting and only runs a few seconds. A compression check shows about 40-45 psi, is that low enough to warrant a ring change?

Thanks

If you have the venerable Pulsa Jet carb you need a diaphram.

Easy Id on this carb is gas tank is bolted to the bottom of the carb.

Some say the newer blends of gas give more troubles with this. Someone told me briggs has a newer material so try your briggs dealer.

With the magnatron this is the only foible of the older style briggs left. Indestructable little units.

Did you make sure the fuel line to the carb is clear?

Will it keep running with the choke on, or if you spray some gas or ether in the carb?

If it does, it is likely a blockage of the fuel line.

Many, and I think your engine, has a "easy start" system that holds the valve open a litle at cranking speed. This would make any compression test invalid.

I have a 5 hp briggs that runs a v4 cylinder air compressor. It has 45 50 psi compression and runs just fine. Ill bet your diaphram is bad. They are about $1.50 at the parts store. Hope this helps.
