Bruce..... ...Yes and NO. Sherman's were a dealer installed aux-tranny. There are 2-speed OverDrive Shermans with a "L" shifter lever over yer left toe. There are some less common 2-speed UnderDrive Shermans with a "L" shifter lever over yer left toe. Then there is the more common and popular 3-speed Combo Shermans (OD + UD + Std) with a crooked doglegged "S" shifter over yer left toe. Problem with UnderDrive is it slows the PTO rpms too and really doesn't slow the tractor groundspeed enuff to rototill. What you NEED is the rare and fragile Howard after-tranny rototiller auxillary transmission. (Howard is about 3.5:1 gearing slowdown; Sherman UD is about 1.66:1 slowdown) Every spring, this great 8N-Board gitts inn-queeries about rototillin' with their 8N-Tractors; the answers is always the same. The 8N-Tractor is too high groundspeed for rototillin' but are great 2-bottom plowin' fool. (it'll plow an acre in about 1-hr but you'd rototill for 4-hrs for that same acre). There are some that'll "bragg" about rototillin' with their 8N-Tractors, then they'll conffess take'm 4-6 passes with the rototiller before they gotten the soil tilth conditioned. Thats 16-24/hrs for 1-acre. Badd enuff to spend 8-hrs mowin' 16-acres of hay. Back in the 70's, used to see 8N-Tractors pullin' 3-point mounted AUX ENGINED rototillers thru the grapefields near Lodi, Calif. Don't know who made the rototillers with extra engine. Didn't really care 'cuz I was cowboy'n and real cowboys ride horses (grin). Iff'n Ya just gottta rototill, RENT a rototiller tractor ($100/day)..... ....Dell
