another problem with a different motor, this time the mower belongs to my dad and we cant figure out what the deal with it is. My problem is, it won't turnover unless the carb is completely covered so no air can enter and when it starts it runs excellent for about 3 or 4 minutes then dies. tried carb adjustments, new sparkplugs, sanded sand off the flywheel and magneto, and cleaned carb. when it starts it blows smoke for a few seconds then that clears up. throttle response is great and so is compression.

I just found this site and I think its awesome
thanks for all the help,
mike

Take the carb off and clean the VERY small jet, well....really a very small and I mean very small hole that is located on the carb base where the float is. Small hole....did I say small hole, I mean very small hole....most people don't even see it...it is that small...use a tip cleaner for a torch set or a very fine wire....most times when a engine only runs when on full choke it is due to that hole being plugged. I have bought many engines that would only run on choke...owners gave up trying to fix them. Once you learn about this small jet, you will be fixing most small engine in a matter of minutes.

I had the same problem with a weed trimmer, turned out a little filter on the end of the fuel line (inside the tank) was getting plugged as it sucked up fuel, so it would run fine then stop after a while.

I'd say for your engine, try rinsing out the tank with solvent, clean out the fuel line, clean or remove the filter and put in fresh gas.
