I was wondering if anyone knows of any links on the internet for free plans or blueprints for barns? I pretty much know what I want to build and
would do so without plans, but I will need
to show the county a plan to get a permit.
As a last resort, I guess I can draw something
up, but would rather have something more official.

Thanks for your time,

Tim, Ohio

Looks like MarkB sent you to a good site. One link on the NDSU site is to MWPS (Midwest Plan Service). This is out of Iowa State University. They would be my GO TO place for such plans. (Once a Cyclone always a Cyclone).

MWPS has some down loads. I would suggest not trying to save too much money here. $20 or $30 isn't much when you are putting thousands in a building. Remember buildings need to be built for the area they are constructed in. Buildings for northern Minnesota need to be built for more snow load than southern Okolohoma. These two places will cover this issue and many others.

I have included a direct link to ISU's MWPS

Here is a website that has plenty of plans. Just choose what you want.

Tim,

The North Dakota State University site below is the only decent source of free plans I've found.

However, many of the plans on this site are old, and may not satisfy your building inspector. Here's my suggestion: You've got to buy the materials somewhere. Most of the major lumberyards will plug your requirements into their computer and spit out plans and a complete bill of materials. I got my kit from Carter Lumber.

One thing that building inspectors is fussy about are trusses. Don't try building your own trusses; it's more aggravation than it's worth and the inspector will have a fit. Buy prefabbed trusses and ask the factory to give you a "sealed drawing", which is a drawing of the truss that's been signed off by a licensed Professional Engineer. That will make the inspector happy.

Carter Lumber didn't provide me with an end view drawing of my post frame building, so I did have to sketch that up. It was no big deal, I just used the info from Carter and drew it up.

One other thing: visit your building department before hand and tell them what kind of building (post frame or stick) that you want to build. They probably have some information about local codes to get you started.

Michigan State Univ ag dept has barns and shed plans, but I"m sure it would take some surfing their site to find them. I had the site until my hard drive crashed, now I"d have to start from scratch. Bottom line is that most Ag oriented universities will have out building plans.
