I am in the market for a good used garden tractor which will be used mostly for mowing (2.5 acres) and snow removal. Can anyone recommend a good year, make and model. I don't mind spending the money if I get something that's reliable, but I don't want to buy a new tractor. Thanks.

I have a 20hp Sears Garden Tractor and would not recommend it, especially for snow removal. I have a two stage snow thrower attachment for it (which works absolutely awesome, even on the heaviest, wettest snow you can imagine) but the tractor is too small for it. I can hardly steer with it and it doesn't pick it (the snow blower) up very high. Between the tractor and thrower, I think I have over $3000. into it. It really is garbage. I bought it new.

My only advice is get a snow thrower attachment (as opposed to a plow) and make sure its "two stage" .

I did have an old Allis Chalmers B1 Garden tractor which I picked up with the mower deck, front plow & snow thrower for $400 bucks!!! That's when they knew how to make garden tractors. They are still around and if you're patient, you'll find one. It didn't have much horse power (I think arond 9), but as we all know, horses were different back then (I think it was made in 1963).

Good luck!

Do you still have the Sears Tractor, I have a 20hp from 1983 and the thing is awesome, it has the hydrostatic drive and enough power to spare while moving large loads, well I was wondering if you still have the snow blower and what year your stuff is?

Cheers

Jared

Wheelhorse is very reliable. If you are going to move snow, you want the hydrostatic transmission, reguardless of if you are using a plow or a snow thrower. I have a 1992 520H that I have really beat on, and it hasn't let me down yet. I mowed a 1 acre yard, a 4 acre pasture, and used the mower as a brush hog to make and keep clear about a mile of horse riding trails. I finally got a Farmall 100 to help out in the pasture and the woods, as I was pretty hard on belts and blades, went thru a couple sets a year hitting rocks and wood.

I've had excellent luck with Simplicity, Allis-Chalmers, and now Kubota. They have all been in the 18hp range and bigger. The Allis/Simplicity make the best mowing deck on the market.

If I had it to do all over again I'd look for a Cub Cadet, or a Wheel Horse
