We are getting overrun with coons and 'possums. I want to relocate them with a live trap. What bait can I use that won't attract my cats?

Directions: Drink 10oz of a 12oz beer. Reluctantly place remainder 2oz in small cup and put in trap. Presto, never had a cat and have shot a lot of drunk raccoons.

Had the same problem with coons, caught over 100 of them in the last 2 years.
As I was walking out of the farm store with my new live trap,I met a hunter/trapper friend who asked what I was trapping and what I was going to use for bait? I said the booklet with the trap said to use dog or cat food. The trapper said no way, with that bait all you will catch is your cats. He said to bait it with small marsh mellows, coons love sweet things and cats dont. It worked very well, have only had one or two cats in the trap and only because they were curious. I never caught the same cat twice, they learn after the first time. The coons have died by the dozens for a couple of sugar coated M mellows.

BSer your wasting your thie relocating them , here In ILL the DNR tried relocating them and put collars on them and some coons had traveled up to 50 miles in as little as 3 weeks to there former home. So they claim since we have a surplus of both SHOOT them to bring there numbers down to a manageable level.

Leland, I thought a Redbone coon hound was the answer, and a bunch of fun in the process.

It you'st to be until fur prices dropped to nothing , it cost a lot of money to feed and take care of hounds anymore and a lot of guy's around here never replaced there hounds after they passed on.

I ran about 3 to 1 cats to varmits using salmon. Good news is the cats wont eat salmon or canned cat food for that matter any more.

If you dig a 4 inch dia. hole about 5 inches deep, place your bait in the hole, place the trap with trigger over the hole, you can catch many coon with the same bait. and the best bait I've found, is a can of sardines. But sardines will catch just about anything you have on your place. So if you catch your cat's, don't get carried away and haul em off.

Use sweet baits to keep MOST cats out.
Some coon favorites, not in any preferance order,
Marshmallows
peanut butter
jelly/jam
Anise oil/ extract (on lets say a cookie) :)

Possums will eat the same stuff, especially if they're in the area and you got their attention. Good luck

My sister tells me she had good luck with grape jelly, and that the 'coons prefered Concord.
I didn't need to bait the trap for this possum; he had no way out.

I'll be doggone, I got one of those keyboard things for xmas. Been wondering what it was for. Seems like a chunk of 2x10 would work under that trap just as well, but heck, whatada I know.
