I am a collector and tractor enthusiast and when I go to shows or just shoot the breeze with the folks ,they always say the best tractors ever built were the Farmall M seies and the 4020 and the 4440. Which of these 3 are the best?

Re: Let's Vote Farmall A in reply to King Klone, 06-04-2005 06:01:57
I may get the year wrong, but I think it was a 1942 or 43 Farmall A that amazed me. The block froze and cracked in the winter of 1964. The whole side of it had a crack 14"-16" long and about 3/8 of an inch of a gap. It was patched with some kind of epoxy that lasted till 1987. Then I ground it out and replaced with JB Weld because it was seeping too much water, and I had no welder available to nickle-weld the block or replace the motor. To the best of my knowledge, it"s still in 1 day a week service with a 72" belly deck mower & a 6" snowplow in the winter. It mows & plows the 8 acre lot & softball diamond in Rising Sun, Md. It was a real Die-Hard, and I"d love to have it here in FL.

For just downright durability and versatility and holding their value, considering all years, the Deere 4440 is the best tractor ever built. The 4020 was decent but over-rated. For the antique purists, fans of pre-1960, I'll put the Deere 70 up there. I'd given the honor to the Farmall M if it had any kind of decent hydraulics, a three-point and a live PTO. The best small tractor ever was the Massey 135. The Ford 5000 honorable mention in the 67 HP class.

I go with John from LA. When they are running all are the best in it's class, when a rod is hanging out the block none are worth a crap.

Klone: I've been kicking around planet earth now close to 63 years. Farmed a good bit of my life and had IH, JD, MF, Case and Cockshutt. I've yet to see what I consider would be a perfect tractor. If I look at the mainline companies around in 1960, and consider what they had to offer, I think each had at least one feature I liked. I will say this, IH and JD each had more than one feature I liked.

There is a saying that John Deere should be the best tractor as they've been most sucessful at using other companies good ideas. They never had any of their own. You think about it, Oliver used the first 6 cylinder engine in a farm tractor, Cockshutt had the first IPTO, Ferguson had first 3 point hitch, Ford had the first power shift. There you have it, 4 of the most important firsts and I never even mentioned IH or JD. That's not to say they didn't have good ideas.

best tractor is the one that will do the work you want it to; Farmal Cub to Farmal M, too diferent classes: parts and service avaibility, comfort; what is comfortable to me may not be comfortable to you; handability; if you are missing your left foot you do not want a foot clutch but a hand clutch, if you are missing your right hand you do not want a hand clutch, no one tractor is best for everybody or every job, they all have there good and bad points and cannot be juged fairly as to what is best, utility tractor will go in 6' high cow shed door 8' high tractor will not, every job is different and one will not be good for all jobs

Note that the M started 1939 to middle 50s, JD 4020 and 4440 started 60s to 80s. For their times, they would be considered about the best. To compare a M to a 4440 is a bit unfair to the M- about like compareing a 1940 Ford F3 to a 1975 GMC/Chev C30. I have worked with M and 4440- 4440 is much nicer/newer but also much more $$. M can still do about 1/2 of 4440 for 1/10 the cost- still useful even if its 20 years older. Compare IHC M to JD A or 60 2 cylinder tractors- about same age. RN.

The best tractor ever built comes from a dealer that is close by and has a well stocked parts department. They all break at one time or the other and the brand/model I can get running the quickest is the one for me.
End of story!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!

I would say this. They were all mostly overbuilt, made to work and all contributed to what we all enjoy today. All colors had good and not so good ideas but there are many a good old north american made iron still running and working today.I wonder how many of today"s built models will be around in 60-70 yrs from now in operating condition.Dan

King Klone, Sounds like you might just talk to Farmall fans. LOL, What we have here is like three guys trying to decide the best pickups, Chevy, Ford or Dodge with an International guy snickering in the background staying quiet with his answer. It is a matter of preference and what works for the individual. Could this be a loaded survey to verify that the Farmall M is the best tractor without including all others? LOL

Wow, there are a couple of responses on here that are way out of line. It seems to me that a guy was just trying to start a discussion and a couple people jumped down his throat. If you don't like the converstaion just skip it there is no reason to behave like that.

I've got many a neighbor still use them big black draft horses. Although did see one out on a rusty old crawler of some sort some years back, but that was before his "elder" made him get rid of it. I'm thinking he's preferring a big black draft horse too, these days.

What is it you're hoping to accomplish???? Are there gonna be awards? Assuming one tractor "wins", who gets the awards? Just trying to start trouble, right? Or maybe the "M" enthusiast will win over the JD guys (or vice-versa), via a reasoned, intelligent discussion?

Thurlow,

Seems to me the fellow was just trying to start a conversation. Is there a problem with that?

Dug

BTW, of course any JD ever made was the BEST tractor.

Hey Dug, no problem with him starting a conversation; has at least as much right to post here as I do. You and I both know that a VERY large percentage of what goes on here is trivial (see this post) anyway. BUT, I consider these color wars to be childish,in the manner of "my dad can whip your dad". Of course, it would be possible to resolve the matter, i.e. find out if my dad COULD whip your dad..... .at least, before mine passed away. In the matter of JD vs. IH or whatever, there is,of course, no resolution. I've posted my share of trivial, inconsequential "stuff" and will continue to do so. I encourage Mr. Klone to do the same.

Having had the 4020 and now a 4230, the latter appeared to be a much refined 4020. Simple things like completely changing and relocating the oil cooler (mechanism), the float function for hooking up remotes (very nice), easily adjustable remote flow controls, dual remotes that were designed in, smoother operating controls, beefier front end, soundguard cab, pto lever in dash not on the side, gauges rather than idiot lights for oil pressure and charging ckt, alternator rather than gen, 12v ckt rather than 24 (not that the 24 was bad, it just complicated things), larger tires.....

If you like red tractors, it is the M. If you like the green tractors it is the 4020 or the 4440.
