About 6:40 am today we had a 3.8 earthquake which makes two in less than a year along the/or close to the New Madrid Fault line.We have Reelfoot Lake here close which was caused by a large quake in 1811 I think which made the Mississippi river run backwards for three days.I heard a sound like a big heavy truck passing my house this morning but there was no truck.Heck I pay 90.00 bucks a year and have to come up with 15% deductible if something happens along them lines.

I have read quite a bit about the earthquakes of 1811-1812... If "those quakes" hit today"s midwest... possibility of 10,00-150,000 people would be killed outright! Maybe more! Sure is a lot to contemplate. Some of the first-hand accounts that I have read about, talk about how folks in the New Madrid area were hearing "thunder" {on clear days}, and booming like cannons, for several years before the big ones hit. Over that one year time period it is estimated that as many as 78+ earthquakes occurred, 3 have been guessed at over 8.3, and 5 to 7 were estimated to be over 7.5... {the Richter Scale had not been invented yet}.

Can y"all guess what would happen to the infrastructure {powerlines, telephone, pipelines, roads, bridges, food supplies, water supplies, fuel supplies...} if those kind of quakes occured in the winter months like they did back then? Starvation, freezing, panic... total chaos!

Scary thoughts!

man thats weird because the last two we have had I have been at work and if it hadn't been on the radio I would have never known we had a quake. And UC is closer to it than where you are. No one knows when the big one will hit so I try not to worry too much about it. Maybe it is those presses at work shaking the floor all the time , I am so used to it I don't notice another shake :)

Quake info links in reply to Jak, 06-02-2005 09:04:28
Here are some quake information links that show recent events. The U.S. Geological Survey is now making predictions for the California area. There is a link to a prediction map for the proceeding 24 hours probability.

Whether you feel the quake or not partially depends on the depth of the quake, not just on magnitude.

I used to think quakes were pretty neat until we had the 6.8 in March of 2001 (Seattle area). That'll rattle you pretty good. Hope you folks don't get hit with anything that size. Your building codes weren't written with a good sized earthquake in mind.

Most of the major cities in the South, do have earthquake construction in their building codes. But feel sure that the smaller towns and rural areas don't.

Sure is a different feeling when the windows rattle and the earth shakes. Makes what Man does seem pretty small.

Hey Fred,if we had a 6.8 it would level most places.Imagine Memphis with the old buildings there.

Hey Jak, where exactly are you located? I am down here in Jackson(TN) and according to the report I had it pegged for hitting right around the Bogota area. I personally did not feel it here but have talked with some that did. Case

I am about 55 miles north northwest of you around the Martin/Dresden area. What I heard was like a school bus going by the house at a good rate of speed or an 18 wheeler rollin along pretty good.Didn't notice any movement though.
