I have a NAA Ford that was special built and used in the coal mining industry in either souther IN or KY. It runs great, but I do not know how to get it in gear and the neightbor may have tore it up pulling it out of the barn to my house. I need some help getting machinical information and gear stuff. My husband did it, but he has died. Thanks

If they didn't make it different than the standard naa because of the coal mining, it should be the standard 4-speed. Push in the clutch and shift like any car with reverse being up and to the left. You don't give enough info. Does it start and grind when you try to put it in gear or is it stuck in gear?

It starts, runs great. It does not make any noise when you shift. It just sits there. One of the boys lengthened the clutch pedal arm and it moved a wee bit. It is not a standard built NAA.
It has a high and low with step up and step down. Two sped rear end. The big handle on the front left must be in gear before shifting the right gear arm forward to move. But,... There is two controls on the left below the seat one is the PTO and the other controls the two speed rear end. I do not know how to even tell if the neighbor broke something or if we are about to with all the monkeying around the boys are doing. They have given up and now I must figure it out. I got most of this information from my husbands cousin last night. He does not remember how to drive it either since it has been so long since he used it. It was runing when we drove it out here last fall. But that was before the new neighbor put his hands on it. The clutch pedal goes back up after release. Since Ron lengthened the arm it moved a little, but it made a small grinding noise and I had him stop. I was afraid they would make it worse. My husband always had me not to touch the back gears and I have not drove it for 15-20 years. I am in my 60s and now with him gone I need to figure it out and do the work.

Jean..... ...I don't know what makes yer NAA special for coal mining, its NOT FACTORY.

But it does sound like yer describing two differnt and popular dealer installed auxillary transmissions to go with the NAA 4-speed tranny and probably to slow the tractor down while negoating the narrow shafts bulling coal carts.

The front shifter over yer left toe is commonly refered to as a "Sherman". It may be the more common and popular 3-speed aux tranny with a "crooked dog-leg" shifter lever. ...or... it could be a more rare 2-speed underdrive aux tranny with a simple "L" lever shifter. Foward for slow speed and aft for faster speed. There is a middle "neutral".

Sounds like the lefthand 6" round PTO shifter plate under yer left heel has the shifter lever for the weak and fragle "Howard" after-tranny gearbox. Desirable for slowing the tractor down so you can use a "rototiller". Also know as "Rotory Hoe" from England. It is eather in "hi" or "low" and I don't remember a neutral. It was NOT DESIGNED TO PULL STUMPS. Many have failed because of "overload".

May I invite you to repost your NAA tranny problems as you've explained them OVER ON the N-Board. We specialize in NAA's and other OLD Ford tractors. And would love to try and help you get yer ol'Jubbie runnin' good..... ...respectfully, Dell (WA), N-Board

Dell, I would love to. I am not sure I can find the NAA board or how to get to it on the computer. I am going to try. OH! it is a 1954. The tractor, I understand, was called Jubelee for 1953 to celebrate the anniversary of Ford and then NAA for 1954. It was discontinued after that. (At least that is the history I pulled up on the Ford website. It may be off some too.) One man, a tractor business person, said he wanted to know if it had a Sherman transmission. I read in the Ford tractor history that they were discontinued some where around there in most tractors. Thanks, Jean

Jean..... ...saw yer new post on the N-Board. Gottta remember, these ol'N-Tractors were designed for horse farmers and you can operate a computer.

While you are technically correct, ONLY the 1953 NAA is offically called a "Jubilee", (in honor of Ford's 50yrs of being in business) we affectionalately call both the 1953 & 1954 "Jubies", with no dis-respect intended. ONLY the 1953 NAA cyclops grill badge has the word "Jubilee" emblazened, the 1954 NAA did not. The N-Ford Master Parts Catalog (MPC) makes NO DISTINCTION and calls'em both NAA's..... ...Dell
