Anyone know a source for a good HEAVY cat 1 top link? I just bought my 3d one this year. I keep bending or breaking them, usually using the rear blade on my WD 45 with 3 pt conversion. My implement dealer (Deere) says the only top links he can get are made in India and they are crap. He's seen a lot breakage or thread pullout with them.

Thanks

In most instances you can run a Cat II top link with the appropiate reducer bushings. We do this on a Massey 65 which likes to destroy top links. Get the approtiate bushings and usualy they will screw short enough to work. Most of them are cap too, but heavier duty cap then the Cat. I that are available. It worked for us.

Tony Carbaugh has a heavy duty WD top link that he sells for 15 bucks. It looks just like the one I have. I hang an 1100 lb bush hog on mine in some pretty heavy duty conditions with no problems other than it sliding sideways on the rockshaft on sidehills. Two pipe clamps fixed that.

Sorry, I misread your post. It sounds like you're using a hitch that's too light for a WD or WD45. Again, take a look at Tony Carbaughs stuff.

My advice is to try to find a used one. Like you say, all the new ones are from India; have been for the last few years. The ends appear to be cast and are very brittle. I lucked out when I bought a used mower that had a top link thrown in; otherwise I'd be buying a new one every year.

The weight of a WD45 ramming all that inertia into the weenie little Cat I top link as the balde catches something. And the top links bends, well of course the top link will bend. You have exceeded the limits of a Cat I hitch. The top link is really intended for a tension load instead of a compression load anyways. So that's two modes of abuse to make the link fail. How about purchasing the $1.99 bushings and using a Cat II or Cat III top link? Three top links this year plus how many in the previous years????? ????? ??? There is a pattern there.

I don't want to argue as various conditions and forces can exist, however, normally a top link is in tension if the blade hooks something while in reverse, it would be in compression if it hooked it going forward with the blade on the ground. It would depend on the pivotal forces on the lower links and could be under reverse forces. I do agree cat I is a little light for any real work or abuse as it may be.

The forces could be either way depending on the blade angle, upper link length. Or how large, how fast, how tall and how solid an object our Captain Nemo is ramming into.
