Bobcat M-600 Question

I recently aquired a Bobcat M-600. All the lift hydraulics work well. However I am having problems turning the machine. Only once has the machine turned properly, when I drove it off the flatbed and turned into my driveway (it did not turn properly when it was loaded onto the flatbed). I have adjusted the clutches per the owners manual with no change in operation. Forward and backward work fine. When trying to turn, the machine hops and stops. I have pulled the side covers and checked chain tension - all seems correct and chains and sprockets look new. The drive belt looks ok but is very sloppy - lots of play. The variable speed drive does not seem to be working. You can hear the pump working but no visable change to the pulley. Does anyone know how much play there should be in the main drive pulley when the variable speed drive is in the low speed position?

I have a Bobcat 500, same basic machine but with a 60 inch bucket. It sounds like you got trouble in the speeed control and or belt. That belt should get tight when you move the speed control lever, and the sheaves should change size. If you have a manual, study it for answers. Don't expect that old Bobcat to steer and turn like the newer hydrastadts do. No way. Those older ones drive best on snow and ice, where the tires can easily break traction, and are most miserable to turn on pavement. But it should go and not jump and jerk around. Those old ones will still do a lot of work.

I have a M600 also, there should be very little play in the drive belt. Sounds to me that your belt is worn out or the wrong size.....Since you have a manual check it about the adjustment to the virable speed valve. It has a fair amount of text concerning the need to adjust the valve. It take more force to turn the machine than to drive it just straight forward and back..... I would start there...I found a great source of used parts....

Buddys bobcat service...contact Buddy by fax at 800-340-2101. next to impossible to reach him by phone, but he responds to faxes within a day. Great guy to work with...I have bought many new and used parts for my 600 from him and have been very pleased with every part. and he really knows his stuff..... good luck and let me know if I can help you...

Bruce

I changed the drive belt and that was the problem. The variable speed pulley was frozen and took some time to work loose. Putting the belt on is a major ordeal! I finally got the belt on and did a quick test for motion- turned fine. I am still unable to get the outer half of the variable drive pulley back on. The new belt is stiff and I was not able to get the pulley"s compressed enough to get the snap ring on. Will work more on it today. Is there a trick to this? My manual does not go in to detail on "how to". I have the piston to the variable drive pulled all the way out and am still about 3/4" from getting the ring on. Hey, what do I expect when I only paid $1500.

Glad to hear that your problem is the belt and speed control. Those can be fixed. I"ve been there and done that on that speed control, and I know its something else. If I rember right I had to buy a new snapring plires, and get my son who is about 28 years younger then I am, to help me get that speed control back together and working. Also, one time the speed control went haywire, and that snap ring had came out, and was letting the pullely halves too far apart. My son fixed it that time without me getting my hands dirty on it.

Variable speed is back on, and now the belt is super tight. Too tight I believe. The rear spring pulley is adjusted as far out as possible, however the belt is so tight that it has the spring side pulley looking out of whack. No matter how much I adjust the springs I cannot seem to get it straight (it was straight with the old worn out belt). The lack of even tension from the springs causes the belt to sit uneven in the front pulley, which causes a wobble and thumping noise to the axle. Bearings are not worn yet but if I don't get it right soon I will be replacing bearings next. I am finding that although I knew nothing about these machines a couple days ago, I am learning faster than I wanted to.

Been away from computer a couple of days. Your last post, it sounds like you have gotten into that bobcat deeper then I have ever been. I do know that when you move the speed control, the top pulley changes sizes, and the bottom one is supposed to get bigger or smaller on its own and keep the belt properly adjusted and aligned. They used to use the same principle on combines, before hydrostats, and Polaris ATV"s use it in there automatic transmissions. On Polaris, they have a govener that changes the size of the pulley depending on the speed of the engine. I almost wonder if your bottom pulley is rusted fast or whatever so that it doesn"t change size? Sorry I can"t help you more. Delbert
