The local MF - Case IH - Kobota dealer in Weatherford Texas, Ellis Equipment, just lost their Massey Ferguson contract as a dealer. They will no longer be able to sell any MF tractors, Hesston hay equipment (also owned by AGCO), or any parts. They have been a MF dealer at least since the 1950s and maybe longer. The AGCO corporate did not like the dealer being also a dealer of Kobota tractors. The dealer tells me he was selling 20 Kobotas for every 1 MF and MF corporate did not like the pressure. Dealer says the high sales of Kubota is due to price, quality, and lower repairs. Now I will have to drive to another town to find a much smaller MF dealer, plus establish new relationships. Too bad, sad day for MF.

TomTX, I saw that Ellis had rearranged their display lots and added a lot more Kubotas, but hadn't heard about the MF loss. Will they still get me parts for my TO30? I'm just down the road in Aledo on 4 acres; how about you?

Centerline, I am out South of town near Tin Top. They told me yesterday they would be unable to even order parts from AGCO. Now our closest dealer is just out of Azle toward Fort Worth, named E & E equipment company, owned by Mark Ellenberger. Nice man, just a bad location for us. My other tractor is a NH and a lot of times the Weatherford NH dealer will not have a part in stock, and I have to drive to Decauter, 50 miles one way.

My Sister in law had the MF dealership for a couple of years, but MF yanked it from her last month. It was located in Parks, LA- center of sugar cane farming. She sold a lot of small and mid-size tractors, but couldn't compete with the big ones. MF said it was all or none, so she said come get em!

Local small town just picked up a franchise. Had no MF dealer for 50 miles. Seems he is selling tractors among other things and things look good. Gets my MF parts quickly.

Dealerships mean everything. in reply to TomTX, 05-25-2005 12:45:53
To me dealerships mean everything when it comes to buying a tractor. If I can't readily get parts the tractor isn't the right color no matter what color it is.

A number of years ago the local John Deere dealer closed. It opened about a year to year and a half later under new ownership, but the damage/reputation had been done as far as I was concerned.

I bought a Ford since they had the most solid dealership. With the majority of the Amish and Mennonites around operating Fords I figured the dealer would be around a long time.

Sorry to hear that you lost your dealer. I personally think that was the demise of Minneapolis Moline, lack of dealerships.

Twenty miles away, there are two dealers, located perhaps 1/2 mile apart. The First one was originally a FORD tractor dealer. The Second Dealer was a Sperry New Holland dealer. Currantly the tractor dealer sells the New Holland line of Blue tractors---and also the AGCO line of Hesston hay equipment---but NOT the NewHolland line of implements. The dealer selling New Holland balers, mowers and rakes sells Agco Allis and MF tractors too. If the Agco company is getting prissy about what their dealers are selling, I invite them to come and sort this one out!

Interesting post. IH applied lots of the same pressure to their dealers in the late 70's. One was told that his lot acreage was too small, another was told that he was selling too little new equipment, but he had a booming business in repair parts. IH said: "correct it or else". Those were the dealers nearest to me. The one with too-small lot just closed up and retired, the other just concentrated on repairing heavy trucks and construction equipment. IH really helped boost their own business, didn't they?

Thats what happens when you let a copy machine salesman run a heavy equipment company.

Agco has it the worst, but all farm machinery dealers are struggling with dealership issues like this. My NH dealer carries parts, but does not deal in new large tractor sales any more. It was too spendy to keep up with the corporate demands. Sad, as that reduces the number of those tractors in the area, and the downward spiral continues.

Bigger better faster.

Our county here in s.w. Pa. basically has no farm equip dealer. The little JD dealer is lucky to have one new tractor on the lot & it'l be a small one. The "Ford-NH " sells mostly cub-cadets & some used farm tractors picked up at auctions. Neighboring county has a decent IH dealer-great for old IH parts & new Mihranda tractors. Another county 50 mi the other direction does have a decent JD dealership-but not at all accomodating or friendly-like. A local farm boy, since about 1970 has made his million bringing in decent tractors from "the west".

local dealer here lost his MFsmall tractor contract when he took on Kubota too.. but he was higher for the Kubota's than he was for the MFs thing was he was the CIH dealer and just didnt want AGCO around and the local KUBOTA dealer went belly up he snipped it.

we lost our REAL MF dealer in 1982, Oliver/white dealer in 77 or 78, JD dealers in 84,90,94,99 oh and the one the relatives ran in 68

IH closed one down close because he didnt have a building with 15' clearance--- ( combines are only 14' and his shop was that tall) and moved it to another town.. then it went belly up 2 times in 5 yrs. Case closed up in 1980.
