Running a 24 hp Linamar Engine yesterday. Engine started surging. I did the simple stuff. Changed the fuel, inline fuel filter and cleaned the air filter. Engine still surged. Opened the choke about 20% or less and engine smoothed out at operational rpm. Looking for ideas on what I need next to check? Idle rpm is rough now as well (no choke).

Thanks

Surging is usually the result of an over lean mixture. Make sure that your carb jets are clean and the right size.

My Farmall would run only part choke. It would surge and sputter if choke was opened up all the way. Soaked and cleaned and rebuilt carb twice and still bad. Bought a brand new carb and fixed the problem.

Sounds like crud in one of the carb jets. May be time to take it apart and clean it out. A tiny wire will help clean out the jets. May also be simple carb adjustment of idle mixture. Sometimes those screws wiggle out of adjustment. Good luck.
