Marshalls introduced the cartridge start system on their Series one Field Marshall. Cartridges are available from Robert Crawford in Linconshire, England. I own a Field Marshall but prefer to use the starting handle because of the severity of the cartridges.

If you ever have a chance to see the original "Flight of the Pheonix" movie, they used cartridges to start the engine on that plane.

Hey! You beat me to it by mentioning Flight of the Phoenix. Was Jimmy Stewart just too cool or what in that scene trying to start the engine?

Did you know that Jimmy Stewart LED a group of bombers on what one of the most dangerous missions of WWII, that being bombing raids on the oil production facilities in Ploesti, Romania? Jimmy Stewart is the REAL DEAL. No wonder he was the lead in the movie Strategic Air Command. He ended up being a full bird colonel in the USAFR. He flew supersonic B-58s, too.

Really? Saw it at an antique tractor pull several years ago in Klossner, didn't know it was owned by a local. Have to see if I can figure out who owns it! They didn't pull it, but was neat to see the thing fire up!

Yes and No. There is (was) a cartridge start system used on aircraft and other engines, but it was NOT a shotgun shell. It would be more properly called a gas generator cartridge. On an aircraft engine, it could generat something like 25 horsepower for a few seconds, enough to roll a 2,000 cubic inch engine over a couple of turns.

I have some more information in a book, and could try to dig up some more if you are interested.

There was such a tractor on RFDTV a couple of nights ago (Pacific Time) which showed the engine being started, also a close-up of the shell. Pete

Yes, the Field Marshall tractor starts that way. It was built in England. I have seen a guy start one like that at an antique show.
