I have heard several people say that Massey Ferguson tractors are better than New Holland on pto dependability and power, just wonder what you guys think about this, I have a New Holland tc30 and I love it. I grew up around John Deere and Massey all my life, wonted one of those but my cousin worked at a New Holland dealer and talked me into a New Holland, hope it holds up like a Deere or a Massey hope I havent made a bad choice.

Trey, I've got a New Holland TN 70 and so far (575 hrs) the pto has been the best part of the tractor. Mine is for sale. I need something a little bigger.

A TC30 is just a plain push the clutch and put the pto in gear tractor. There"s not really much that can go wrong. TC35-55 tractors have a hydraulic activated pto and these did have some issues like when using a rotary cutter and you shut the pto off the hyd system would enguage the pto brake. If the rotary cutter was running fast then the force of the cutter spinning could break the metal tab right off of the hydraulic brake disc. If that happens then the pto will not completely stop spinning. Smaller TC series have simple manually shifted PTO"s like your TC30.

Installing an overrunning clutch on the pto shaft of the larger tractors will completely eliminate the danger of damaging them.

I have been on John Deers website and when looking at the comparrison charts, I have noticed that New Holland tractors do not drop as much as most tractors from the engine to the pto. My friend bought a Kubota tractor the size of my tc30, and he told me that while bushhogging when in deeper grass it really pulls his Kubota down, not just saying this because of mine being a New Holland but mine doesnt loose hardly any rpm or anything while bushhogging deep grass it seems to really have alot of power on the pto.

That is an issue with many tractors using a hydraulic PTO brake. The brake is designed to keep the shaft from turning, not to stop a rotating load, especially one as heavy as a brush hog. After I replaced the PTO brake on my Massey 175, I started using an overrunning clutch, just as if it were an old style transmission driven PTO. I still idle the engine way down before I shut off the PTO, that slows everything down while the drive is still engaged.
