I have an IH 574 with hydrostatic steering that began leaking fluid. I purchased a new rubber seal from the dealer and reinstalled the lower part of the unit. While tightening the bolts, I heard a pop and it turns out after the steering wheel did not turn and disassembling the unit again that I had shattered the commutator into several pieces because the center gear had slipped out of the gap and ended up pressing into the commutator while I was tightening the bolts. I do not want to have to purchase another expensive commutator. Does anybody have any tips on the installation so I will not make the same mistake twice?

This falls under the heading that never try this at home KIDDYS leave this to the trained profisonals . 90% of all steering leaks on hdy steering can be fixed with out taking the steering motor apart just by removing the steering wheel and ONE SNAP RING if that is not the leak and it is the as i call it the big rubber band then let some one that has done this before do it that way if he breaks it he will by the new pices.
