I would like to get some opinions on tractor hours by guys who own tractors. What is high hours on a tractor? I have a 3 cylinder gas tractor with a ford 175 CI engine which has approx 4500 hours. The tractor starts and runs great and 99% of the time you cannot even see smoke!

Is this the norm? How about diesel engines as well? What is considered HIGH HOURS?

Thank you, Kindly

The Canadian city boy in the country!

Maintenance is the key. I have had some high houred tractors that were better than low hourer ones. Also if proper repairs were done when needed a high hour tractor could have alot of new parts.

I'm guessing that by the engine, you have a Ford 3600. The 3 cylinder Ford engines were actually designed as diesels, and in the case of yours, converted to gas. Yours was designed for a 10000 hour service life, and there are LOTS that did that. If it's running strong now, with proper care it will last a long time. BTW, I'm not disputing what Allan has stated with regard to service hours. As a generalization, he's dead on. I know that most Cummins and Cat engines today have an expected service life of over 15000 hours before any major service work. Take care.

Actually I have a ford 335, Industrial with a 3pt hitch and pto as well as a loader. I've heard that it was the same as the diesel engine except for the head and compression ratio.

Anyways I'm nearing the 5000 hour mark, and it doesn't even burn any oil yet? It was a countys tractor so I have heard that they do regular service on their equipement.

You have some good figures from Allan. My experience with 20 tractors over the years bears out what he has said. If you wish to compare Kilometers to hours, here is an example. The Mack truck I drive has aprox. 11,000 hours. The Km are close to 650,000 roughly 400,000 miles. I may be off as truck is on second speedometer. It shows 214,000 now and I understand old meter went at 440,000 Km.

Hi C,

Generally speaking, 5,000 hours on a gasser is at the outside limit.

Diesels are hard to judge. Most will agree that 10,000 hours is an average life; but many go 17 to 20,000 hours.

Allan
