i am working on a deutz 4506. the tractor was not idling down when decelerated, so i removed the injector pump and purchased a reman. exchange. i have just installed the new pump and the engine is still reving up when it is accelerated. it will not come back to an idle on it"s own. it cranks and idles perfect, but when you start accelerating approx. 1/3 past the idle, it starts reving up . any thoughts, ideas, or remedies out there??? thanks for any and all info.

i have checked all return lines and they are clear. i have also looked at the air intake and this does not affect the way it runs. any other ideas????

I am not familier with Deutz tractors but there are a couple of guys over on the tractor pulling board that pull them who I am sure can tell you all about what is happeneing to yours.

I'm not familiar with the Deutz, but many European diesels use a throttle plate in the air intake and measure engine speed indirectly from the manifold air pressure. Any kind of vacuum leak will cause these engines to overspeed.

A diesel with a throttle plate? I don't think so. Respectfully, diesels, unlike spark ignitions engines, run on a variable fuel to air ratio so they don't have a throttle plate in the air induction system. In the gas engine, you vary power with airflow at nearly constant fuel air ratio. With a diesel, you vary power by adding fuel to the air charge and the fuel to air ratio varies with the power.

Jerry,

Check out a Fordson Major Diesel to see an example of this setup. I've seen it also on a Mercedes marine engine, and I suspect the Mercedes diesels in Thermo-King refrigeration units are the same.

Understand that the purpose of the throttle is to measure engine speed, instead of using flyweights like most governors. On these engines, the throttle control is connected to the throttle plate. There is a vacuum line that runs from the intake manifold to the injection pump. As engine speed increases, the vacuum applied to the pump increases, which causes the injection pump to cut back on fuel.

Obviously, this is not the most efficient system, since it requires restriction of the air intake at operating speed. But it is a simple system with very few moving parts.

Mark, It may be a vane that is used to indicate airflow (which is proportional to rpm in a diesel since it's running with an open air induction system)but my point was that it isn't a "throttle" in the conventional sense like a gas engine uses. Respectfully,
Jerry/MT

David,

You don't have runaway engine, you have overspeed engine and runaway operator.

You might check to see if return line is

restricted .

george
