I"m in southwest Wisconsin and I"m looking into picking up a 24ft(more or less) flat bed truck with a boom lift. I will do various lifting and hauling jobs for farmers, contractors, and the Amish folks. The Amish have a bunch of sawmills in my area and their oak planks are a full 2in thick, green and HEAVY. I figured a bunch of their customers might need someone with a rig to haul and unload this lumber. Do you folks have any advice, pointers, or pitfalls to look out for?

I"ve gotten good, real world advice from you gents in the past. Thanks in advance.

I would sujest finding a way to also load like tractors or other without using the boom, such as a tilt roll back bed, will tripple your haulling ability, I think more jobs would yus the tilt bed than the boom but both would have there place

look in the great lakes trader this is a truck paper or go to www.autorv.com they have them for sale also. But look for front and rear out riggers a double frame heavy front and rears like 20000# front and 46000# rears auto trans are sweet in soft ground and cummins motors bacause you can get parts about anywhere for this engine and a 15sp trans with deep reduction if you get a manual tranny.

I don't know. My 86 year old father and his wife haul Amish in their minivan and club cab pickup. Do a lot of hauling hay, coal etc too. He just started out slow in an old beater van and built up customers. I don't think you could make a living at it but it makes nice extra income if you ain't got nothin better to do.
