I have a 1965 Internation Truck, Model 190 Cab-over fire truck. It has always run like a champ. Something very strange happend the last time I ran it. It ran perfect like always, I shut it off for about three hours, and tried to restart it. It wouldn't start. (turned over, but wouldn't fire.) I pulled it with my pickup, it started, but only ran on four cylinders, (big block V-8)and acted as though it was really burning oil. I took a compression test, and four cylinders are dead. Nothing. The other four are 110 lbs. Nothing happened while running!! It was sitting and I lost four cylinders worth of compression!! ANY THOUGHTS on why this has happened? Thanks.

Yes, it is a 549. OK, I'll have to get the valve covers off and check it out. The pistons lacking compression are mixed, it is not the back four, front four, or all on one side. Sounds as though timing chain/gear may be the culprit. Thanks for the opinions.

Sure sounds like it jumped time, and the reason for no compression on some of the cylinders is that those cylinders have a valve open when it shouldn't be (on compression stroke).

Which four cylinders have no compression ? The rear four ? If so,sounds like a broken camshaft.

Don't know if that engine has a timing chain or just a set of gears but either the timing chain has stretched and jumped a tooth or the gears have done the same thing. I hope that engine has enough clearance in the chambers that the valves haven't smacked into the pistons and bent. Not a pretty picture.

If its a 65 190 it most likely has a 478 or 549 gas engine, one camshaft,if it was originally a fire truck it probably has 2 distributors.Pull your valve covers of and see whats going on with the valve train and let us know.

I don't know nothin about nothin but does a V8 have two cam shafts? Something somehow not operating the valves on one side?

Naw, don"t think it has two camshafts, but if it is one of those old 550s it has a decompression feature that lets it idle on 4 and it will pull on eight.

It has always idled on all eight before, and now it is a blue cloud of smoke out the muffler, and before it never burned any oil. It stinks like burning oil as well. Turns over funny, you can tell it has hardly any compression.
