What do you guys use for bait to catch groundhogs? I use the gas bombs out in the field but have a bunch near (and under) the buildings I'd like to catch with a trap. I can catch coons with apples or peanut butter but it won't work for groundhogs.

I have heard cat food is good bait, it works well for skunks.

We used a bar type of rat poison/bait to get rid of ours. Threw some down under the shed where they were making their home and in a few days, there was no sign of them. If you can get the bait in where children/pets can't or won't get to it, works great.

Watched my dad one time - clubbed a "chuck out of a tree! Caught "em out of range of his hole, and he sought refuge on a lower limb of a tree. Dad walked up, swinging a short limb in his hand, pendulum style... "chuck was hypnotised by the swinging motion - all of a sudden the club made a complete loop over the top - caught "chuck right in the noggin! Another time we had one seek refuge in a 6" x30 foot aluminum irrigation pipe. Stuck one end in a tree and kept it angling upward at even steeper angles until we heard the screeching clawing sound as the "chuck slid out. When he hit bottom he met a club aside the head. Wood chucks are not good neighbors. We keep finding new ways to discourage then!

Actually, I've used apples successfully on several occasions for woodchucks. I've even shot woodchucks out of apple trees that they've climbed to get the fruit. They're also fond of lettuce, pea greens, clover and alfalfa.

Scout's Honor! Take a look at their claws--they'll work just fine for tree climbing. Even played "ring around the rosie" with one in a big maple tree, just like you do with squirrels. I'd go one way and he'd go the other, until I hid and then threw a rock behind the side he was on. Right on cue, he slid around to my side, where he met 55 grains of .222 caliber lead delivered Airmail Express. Ask any serious woodchuck hunter and they'll probably tell you at least one case of seeing woodchucks up trees. They love apples, and as many apple trees are bred and pruned to be easy to pick from (low to the ground with the fruit on the outside branches) a woodchuck will happily climb them to get an apple now and then.

I also had one in a peach tree enjoying himself
until I blasted him with the shotgun. Haven't
see one in a tree again, but it can happen.

I've seen them sunning themsleves on the top of fence posts and on southen limbs of Maple trees. They would climb the pear tree at the other farm for a treat too. They can swim pretty good as well. Tossed one into the water expecting him to rapidly expire, not so.

I found one sitting on the air cleaner of my car one time. It had a dead battery and when I opened the hood HELLO there he was looking at me. Scared the heck out of me. I slammed the hood on his head and went in the shop and got a steel rod. I opened the hood and he was jammed down in beside the engine. Next thing Woodchuck kabob.

I have great luck with either fresh brocolli broken into pieces or a fresh tomato cut in half so they can smell it better.
