Just curious. I was taught to check hydraulic fluid level on loader tractors with boom and bucket cylinders fully extended to take up max volume of fluid. What do you guys do?

as old said it would greatly depend on the tractor. i check mine when the loader is down and have never had a problem. i believe that a tractor is designed to hold enough capacity for the equipment attached to operate, not to "open all the equipment up" and then fill the tractor full. when you do that then take the equipment off your tractor is over full. just my 2 cents.

Most loaders have double acting cylinders. There's always the same amount of fluid in them regardless of the ram position. If this is true with yours it shouldn't make any difference.

That's not entirely true. The difference in volume between an extended 2-way cyl. & retracted cyl. is the volume of the piston rod/rods. And on loader cyliners that can be considerable. Crude as it sounds I do the same as mentioned below.... When the loader won't raise all the way I add a quart or two more fluid. If the res. gets over filled I have heard of the old IHC Belly pumps on H's & M's exploding from being over filled. My Super H is a Stage II and I want to keep the pump from sucking air as the level in the res. drops when the loader is raised all the way up. The two 2-1/2" x 30" cyl. with 1-1/2" rods use up most of the 6 quart system.

Really depends on the tractor and the system, if I did that on one I have it would dump out a gallion or 2 of fluid when I let the boom down

Yep,

When we get this little dirt deal done, we're talking your basic "strapped/poor house" and the children's inheritance is gonna be history.

But, it'll take 'em a week to get the smile offn' my face when they lay me down. :>)
