Howdy folks,

After droppin some of my dirty laundry in here I hope that y'all will not think too badly about me. Anyway, we just got off the horn with the local JD man about my parts for the '51 R. This is the fella that would go fetch a stick if it meant helpin you out so I know he did all he could to find what I needed. In any case, one important thing was not available...the valve cover gasket. These things are cork material so I can't easily replicate it with simple gasket material. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? There aren't any places out there that sell cork material, are there? I appreciate the help and again, sorry for bringin my straw dispute in here and gettin you guys all dirty. God bless.

Any large auto parts /shop should carry cork sheet stock....I would start with NAPA...Or pick a shop that has been in busness, many years.....good luck

Call Greg at The Old Tractor Company. He will have the valve cover gasket and just about any other part you may need for a JD R. I had to go pretty deep into mine and bought just about everything from Greg, usually a little cheaper than Mother Deere.

Thanks a bunch fellas. I'll start trackin it down. Just wanted to get some input from you all first. Thanks again. God bless.

p.s. The JD man and I discovered a little too late that the whole engine gasket set (including the ones he couldn't find individually) was still available from JD. But I wasn't about to make him go back and order that stuff when he had worked so hard to find the individual ones. Makin the missing ones is no problem.

Just one question for you about your R...

Will it be able to outpull Tuffy Bohl's R? Don't know if you saw what they did to him a couple of years ago at the tractor pull at the OVAM Show. They left the pull back tractor hooked to the sled as a joke. His ol' R moved the whole thing about 20 foot before they stopped him and let him in on the joke... Quite impressive for JD...

Your local Auto Parts should be able to help you.If they try.Victor & Felpro have it . If not contact McMaster--Carr Supply Co. phone is 630-833-0300. Or go online to www.mcmaster.com. I really encourage people to get their catalog its about 3in. thick and loaded with supply items that we need to repair everything from home to antique tractors. I am in no way connected to these people.I was directed to them years ago while looking for laminated brass shim stock to make shim package for a antique engine. Earl In Illinois

Since I know you live close to me, try giving a call to Seip Automotive in Georgetown. If memory serves me, I got a roll of cork gasket material from them once before. If they don't have it, they might know where you can get it.

Where are you? There is a company in Joplin Mo that custom makes gaskets in almost any material. For one gasket it might be expensive if they make it but they sold me a piece of rubberized cork that I used to make my own valve cover gasket for my allis wd. it was thicker, better quality and cheaper than buying a ready made one from the parts house. Their name is Commercial -Gasket and Packing company # 417-623-4695

Its been several years ago that I dealt with them but they were very willing to help then.

Good Luck

I dont know your final intentions with the tractor and you may hate this idea but here goes. The silver aluminum GE silicone[home center] sealer in the large tubes works well for this.I have used it on Sportster primary chain cases for years with no leaks if I prep the surface oil free.Once it dries I pull off the squeezed out excess.Nobody can tell its not cork underneath once in place. No apologies required for me on the straw dispute or anything else on these forums. All interesting reading and entertainment to me.Pictures are great too.

If your looking for cork material maybe try a craft store, they may have several different styles, and thickness.

If you go the silicone/rtv route, assemble the parts just lightly finger tight so you see a little squeeze out around the part . Allow to cure at least overnight then tighten.
