looking for timing info for a continental 6cyc

I have a continental flat head 6 and i dont have any paper work or books for this engine. What is the proper way to time motor and mag together? i think its close but i cant get it to fire. it does have spark just not sure if its firing when its supposed to. any help would be great thanks

what i do on old stuff is to slowly turn the mag by hand till it snaps, then put the mag in in this postion, with rotor pointing to # one cyl on the compression stroke.

If it really has a magneto, (and especially if it is hand-cranked), you do NOT want the impulse to snap before TDC, (at least not much before TDC) or you risk kick-back, and a busted arm.

In the absence of any factory specs, set the impulse to snap just a hair after TDC.

With a magneto, when the impulse is active during cranking, the spark is retarded 20 to 30 degrees. As soon as the engine "catches" and speeds up, the impulse drops out, and timing jumps 20 to 30 degrees advanced, all at once, which is "running timing". The exact figure is determined by how the engine manufacturer spec'd the magneto.

So, with a mag on a hand-cranked engine, timing at cranking is critical, and if that is set correctly to just after TDC (or whatever the engine builder specifies), running timing should be correct, too.

I must have missed the magneto part.

I only had one episode with a magneto. Went to buy this Farmall B and had to crank it to get it going. Never did this before.

Well in short, the handle slipped outta da notch and It took 5 stitches to put my chin back together.

You can start at TDC on the compression stroke and set the dist to just open the points. If you had the dist out, you may have to play with it several times to insure you are on the comp stroke and not exh., or remove the valve cover and watch the valves on #1. If you are on the compression stroke, the valves stay closed for 90 degrees of crank rotation. Otherwise the exh immediately opens.

Or, you can crank the engine and while cranking slowly rotate the dist hoping you accidentally hit the sweet spot.

If you can get it running, turn the dist cw till the engine starts to misfire, then ccw to the same reaction, and set it in the middle. Would be surprised how close that is to the correct value.
