The ivory-billed woodpecker hasen't been seen since 1944 has been rediscovered in Arkansas. (boy I'll sleep better tonight knowing that). Now Agriculture secretary Mike Johanns has promiced millions of dollars to protect this bird. The bird seamed to do ok on its own. When will these officials in gov. realize our money will not last forever. Stan

Just another way for them to try and control more land. My question is how did this bird survive the last 60+ yrs with no govt intervention? ...Jim

Word has it that the survivor was still collecting the social security checks of the supposed last woodpecker that died 60 years ago. Expect a full scale investigation to be undertaken shortly.

If it was discovered on private land, I feel sorry for the person that thought he was the land owner.

Reminds me of the sea otter that was a victim of the Exxon Valdez oil spill -- over several years at a cost of something like $80,000, it was nursed back to health. With much fanfare and a flotilla of boats, it was released into the open ocean only to be scarfed up by a killer whale a few minutes later! At some point of time, you have to look at return on investment.

if they gooberment don"t spend it on the bird, they will just throw more money at the wars or give it to some third world sewer so they can shoot it back at us. in other words, if we don"t protect the bird, we will get the bird!

Well said.
Rather give it to a wood pecker than a pecker head over sea's.
