Small Engine Problem

I got out my Toro 6.5hp mower for the first time this season and it started fine but was pushing
oil out the air filter and dripping all over the
body. It was fine last fall when I put it away for
the season. Is there something that comes to mind
or did a piston ring give out somehow in storage.
It's a Briggs engine about 8 years old but was
running very well last year. Any ideas would be
helpful as I'm trying to avoid a costly trip to
the local mower repair. Thanks.

Thanks to all for the ideas. I will check the
crankcase or vent valve to see if it's stuck or
broken, most likely my problem.

it sounds to me from expirence that the crankcase breather is plugged.

The valve cover has a reed valve built into it.Its function is to keep a slight vacuum on the crankcase so oil won't leak past the oil seals.AS the piston moves up and down or back and forth as the case may be, the volume of the crankcase changes. I imagine the reed valve has stuck or broken and is causing the problem.

A few things to check. Make sure it is not over full on oil
Did you turn it on its side to sharpen the blade? If you do, make sure you turn it with the air filter up, dipstick tube down.
Is the air filter new or is it old and used, if it is used, could be plugged up. This could casue it to draw oil out of breahter.
Check your dipstick o rings and make sure they are not broken or missing.
If this does not help, email me and I will see if I can help
No, you did not break a ring in storage, that cannot physically happen with out some piston movement.
Lastly, is this an OHV engine? it might be a blown head gasket, never have seen one on the 6.5, but it is always possible.

2 things come to mind - smell the oil, is it gassy? If so, needle and seat time. 2nd thing, did you have the engine on it's side - air cleaner/carb side down?

Check all the bolts and make sure thier tight . Or you could have broke a ring when you started it from sitting all winter
