Sorry for the OT post, but just need some friends to talk to. Tomorrow is my Mother's funeral. Sad to see the end coming to that proud, hardworking generation that made the world a better place for all of us. Earlier this month, we buried my Mother-in-Law; a genuine WWII Marine that met and married her husband at Camp Pendleton.
My own Mother was born and raised in a sod house, lived through the dirty 30's, wars and tornados; enduring hardships that would stop a lot of us in our tracks. I just have to wonder what our world would be like, without that generation paving the way for us. God Bless them all!

I lost my Dad Dec 22/04, so I feel your pain. They were truly the greatest generation! If not for them we might be speaking German/Japanese today.

It's never easy to lose those people who were/are so close to you. Especially when you get older and have a lot of memories and those people lost talked to you. My Dad and Mother died within 3 months of each other, and while I dear loved them both, it was time for them. I had time to say goodbye, but with other friends of my generation, I didn't. But I summon the good memories and remember the times they were happy. It eased the loss for me somewhat. I hope you and yours can find some comfort in their memory.

You needn't apologize. There are times that we fight and bicker with each other here, but we are somewhat of a family. You reached out in a time of need, thank you. My condolences in your losses.

My thought & prayers are with you. What gives me hope is reading posts like this and realize that there are a FEW of us whom still realize sacrifices made in the past. Its truely sad, because this new generation gets me bummed out every day lately. The only time you get kindness from people is only so they get ahead and dont give a damn about anyone else.

Howdy Rauville,

Truly sorry to hear about your loss. I'll definitely be praying for you and yours. To me the loss of this generation is a hard one indeed. Though I am from a generation that sees e-mail as standard issue I have always found more in common myself with those from the ww2 generation. Heck, I still farm with my late grandad's equipment and pour money into it each year to keep it up to snuff. Most of my friends are folks from my church who would pass for my parents as far as age goes...or grandparents in other cases. Maybe I'm just odd...or old fashioned but I sure do have nothing but respect and admiration for those fine folks. God bless.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your Mother. Last June my Mother died. My Dad died in 1992. I was glad I was always close to both of them. There generation will never be replaced. This is a hard time for your family, and know there are a lot of people on this sight keeping you and your family in their thoughts, and prayers. Stan

Rauville, My sincere condolences on the passing of your mother. As our generation buries our parents, we will indeed see a passing of a generation of which the world will never see again. That generation endured the great depression (without the welfare system we think we need today), WWII which our own generation and those subsequent would never have the stomach for, and lived to see our generation become the most dysfunctional, and responsible for excesses never dreamed possible 60 years ago. While we enjoyed the spoiling we got along with the values speeches we ignored, our parents were more in tune with reality than we could have ever imagined. We will truly miss them when they are gone.

Sounds trite, but it's still true..... ...the passage of time eventually makes the pain bearable; my parents have been gone a long time; my condolences.

My sympathies Ruaville to you and your family. On April 4th of this year we buried our 83 yr old mother who lived in her own home up until Good Friday. The house now sits empty but the void in our hearts is way bigger. She was a great lady and we will miss her to no end. Its a hard reality to get used to. Again my deepest condolences.Dan in AB

Reminds me of the story my Mom told me about the Depression...she would walk four miles to where my Dad worked every day to take him a head of fresh Cabbage for his lunch.

Their dinners consisted of only fish they caught from the lake they lived on.

First and foremost, I'm VERY sorry to hear of your mothers passing. That's a tough thing to deal with under any circumstances. I lost my father 4 years ago, then mom one year later. I haven't gone one day without missing both of them. And that's a good thing in some ways.... Some folks aren't close enough to their parents to miss them when they're gone. My prayers go out to you and your entire family.

I decided the day they buried my father (also a WW II vet) that the greatest tribute to him and his generation was to live as much of my life in their tradition as I could muster. Do what's right. Stand tall for what's good in life. Be a great example for your kids, and everyone you deal with every day.

My wife tells me, her friends, and her family what a great husband I am on a good many occasions. I tell her, and anyone else that cares to listen, "anything you see about me that you like, thank my father". He taught me to be a good man, and to treat MY wife like he did my mother. If I live to be half the man he was, I'll be happy with myself.....

Once again, I sure am sorry about your mother. If there's anything any of us can do to help, just say the word....

Very Sad indeed.

I know how you feel. I am a member of generation X (just turned 37). The generation you speak of is that of my grandparents. They (ALL OF THEM) were/are truly the greatest generation.

Have also lost my grandparents. I was close to them and knew about their lives. Grandfather came of age during the depression--went off to war. Was captured by the Germans and spent about six months as a POW at Stalag IVB.

The things these men/women endured for us and our future are to be remembered-I share in your loss.

You said that so well and are so right about them being the greatest generation. I am biased though as one of those X gen folks who had older parents (my parents were born in the 1920s) and Im in my late 30's.

I heard the comment made once, (I think on this site) that if WW2 and all that came with it...Hitler, Japan, War bonds, shoes, tires, gasoline rationed and meat too happened now in this day and age. That this nation would be crippled because of the wimps and the whiners, and we would not be able to endure it. I lost my Grandfather in 1998, he was a Lt. Col. Pilot 32 year military career, he was 27 when Pearl Harbor happened. My other grandfather was drafted in 1944, he was 24 at the time and he never saw combat because we dropped the nukes. He is still alive and is 84 now I think, he wont be here 10 years from now. Just like WW1 not many of those guys left, and if they are left they suffer from Alzheimers and being feeble, and they are over 95.

I"m sorry to learn of your mothers death, especially so near to Mothers Day. I remember how difficult it was to sit through church service on Mothers Day the year after my mom died.

The generation you speak of did indeed have good pioneer stock that was quite hardy. They had the core values and as you mentioned showed it with their war efforts. How many today would be willing to ration gasoline and tires, or coffee and sugar?

I hope you find great comfort in your memories. Take care.

I understand your feelings. I still have my parents but I don't know for how much longer. They are both in failing health. That generation really needs to be commended, collectively they probably did more to build what we have now than any other generation. I am afraid that we are not doing quite as good a job. My hat is off to your mother.

That's why they're called the greatest generation. My parents went through the depression and dust bowl era in central Oklahoma. I'm not as tough on my best day as they were on their worst. I know too well what you're going through, but, take heart, there will be better days ahead.

Regards,
Garry
