My 79 el camino let me down today. Aftet it started the starter stayed engaged, not contacting flywheel, but just running. I unhooked the batt. to get it to stop. I reconnected batt, after a lot of attempts with key it started. Like a dummy I shut it off. It failed to restart, and I had to haul it home, before I tear into it I thought someone may give me some helpful info. Stan in calif

The last time I checked the price on a solenoid, the rebuilt starter with solenoid was cheaper!

It sounds as if the solenoid is the culprit. You can get a replacement solenoid cheap enough, and change it out, or, replace the complete starter.
One other thing--- some of those Chevy starters also used shims between the starter and bell housing, which are used to maintain proper distance between the bendix and flywheel. If the distance is too close, you could have a mechanical bind, and the bendix wouldn't retract, causing the starter to hang up as you described.
Good Luck!

The starter stayed running because the starter solenoid stuck in the closed position.

You wrote, "It failed to restart ..." Need more information. Did the starter spin and not engage? Did the starter do anything? Was there a click? Etc.
