Any suggestions for controlling grass/weeds in asparagus?

Chickens -- put them in soon as the snow is gone take them out after they get the area dug up and before the asparagus starts to grow. Fertilize and weed at the same time.

As I understand it, the salt works because the weeds and grass can't take it but the asparagus can. It isn't a "fertilizer" as some claim, or so I'm told.

mix w/water makes sure gets in ground and doesnt wash run off. also deer will lick if off the ground if leave it on top. mix it w/water it willg o into the ground and get absorbed by grass and kill it

Many years ago my family had a large asparagus patch (40'x50')My DAD would run the garden Roto-tiller through it to keep it in rows.....seems to me he sprinkeled cow salt in the rowS on the plants....rather heavy as I rember.....maybe someone else knows more about using salt.....
