I converted my Oliver 77 to 12 volts, and the guys at NAPA told me I had to replace the condensor with a new 12 volt one. This sounded a bit fishy to me, but I figured what the heck for $5.

I installed the new condensor and fired it up. It ran good for about 30 seconds and began breaking up and sputtering. I shut it down and found that it had burned the points. I filed and reset the points, and regapped them and then installed the old condensor back in. I went out and turned down 5 acres with it now and the points are still fine.

Could they have given me a bad condensor? or just a bad one? I always thought that a condensor was a condensor and no real specialties. I want to eventually convert it to electronic ignition. Does anyone know of any automotive junk yard recipes that will work on this old 6 cylinder?

You have to drop the voltage to the points you have to use a resister before the coil or a internal resisted coil.

Sounds like they sold you a bad new condenser. 6 volt or 12 volt condenser is just hogwash,aint no such thing. The condenser's only mission in life is to absorb the voltage spike created in the primary coil winding when the points open,this spike is several hunderd volts,so 6 or 12V has little meaning to a condenser.

Thanks Jon,

By the way, I just started it back up tonight and it burned the points again about 30 seconds. I am running a ford coil that I believe should have internal resistance as I pulled it off a big old Lincoln (1975?? or so) at the scrap yard.

I can't figure out why the points are burning so quickly.

Any ideas???

My motors auto repair manual says Ford/Lincoln coils of the early 70's need a 1.3-1.4 ohm resistor.Sorry I did not look that up before posted the off the top of my head 1.5 ohm figure,close,but not quite correct.

With that lincoln coil you need to add an ignition resistor between the ignition switch and the coil + terminal. 75 Lincoln uses one in the ignition run circuit. Without it the coil pulls too many amps which will quickly overheat the coil and burn the points.
Buick&Deere or one of the others can tell you what ceramic resistor to use. seems I remember 1.5 ohm.
