First I want to say "Thank You" for all your help with my post yesterday. I am just a poor old country boy who need to narrow down my problem before I start spending alot of money. I have a '52 Super C with a zenith carburator. It will run but only with the choke wide open. I know I have good fuel flow to the carb and the filter in the elbow on the carb is clean. It is not sucking air anywhere.I have put new plugs, wires, points and condencer on it. I think I probably need to rebuild the carb but am having problems finding a place to order a kit. Hate to have to buy a new carb when I am not sure it is the problem. Would appreciate any input I could get on this, any other sugestions on this problem or what could be causing it.THANKS ALL.

Have you taken off the air cleaner so you can verify that the tractor will only run with the choke closed? Looking from the outside, my not be obvious what the choke position is.

Definitely remove and clean the gas tank. Also make sure the vent in the gas cap is working.

Could be the float level is set too low. If you get the carb apart without ruining the gasket, you don"t really need a rebuild kit. I think you can get the basic kits at NAPA.

Could be a piece of rust clogging up a jet in the carb.

Good luck,
Bill

Randy, I have had good luck finding a complete rebuild kit through CaseIH (CNH) dealers. Before you rebuild it, look down in your tank, if it appears rusty ans scaley, take it off, clean it and seal it, THEN rebuild the carb. IH's are known for this, and if it hasn't happened before, you are probably due...holler if ya need suggestions on clean/seal of the tank. Good Luck...Pete

Randy, Have you cleaned the carb yet? Sounds like there could be rust or trash in the carb bowl. It can suck into the main jet and plug but settle out after it sits for a while. I would take it apart and thoroughly clean the jets and give it a try.

Good luck

I will assume that you mean "with the choke closed" rather than "wide open"? If this is the case, then you do have fuel problems. When you remove the fuel line from the carb, there should be a very strong flow of fuel, almost a flood, not just a trickle. If the flow is OK, then the problem has got to be internal, but you may not need a kit. Does your carb have another filter inside the fuel inlet? It could be plugged.
