Just rebuilt the 351w in my 84 1-ton SRW 4wd. Bored .030, crank turned .020 under, new pistons, rings all bearings, cam( stock) and lifters, had the had the valve seats reground, and new seals put in. It wont run. the factory intake gasket was a tin that covered the lifter valley, my gasket set came with just normal intake gaskets, i didnt put the tin part back in, just used the gaskets from my kit. I bring No. 1 tdc of compression, distribitor rotor, points to 1 on the cap, I crank it with spark plug out of number 1, and watch the spark testerhits compression and sparks, back fires through carb. I hope this was enough info for someone to help me. Thanks in advance for the help.

Gonna go with Geno on this .Try both firing orders . Depending on what cam you have . 302 , 351's and 351HO can all use same cam ,,just diff firing order .

Ben, what firing order are you using, 15426378 or 13726548? why not rewire and see if it will run on the other firing order. I beleive both cam grind were used on this engine and possibly you have a cam for other firing order.

289-302 cam fits in a 351W,and 351W cam fits 289-302 everything works fine except for the different firing order of the 351W. If the cam/lifters is a jobber unit, they may have given you the wrong cam or use the same one in all engines. With the valve covers off you could watch rocker arm action as you crank it by hand to see which cam is installed.

You might be 180 out on the firing order. Did you check for TDC with the valve cover off and look at the rockers. If not try that. Could you have put the wires on in the wrong direction(counter clockwise vs clockwise. Could be just out of time(it sounds like that)move the dist. ever so little as you crank it over, or use a timing light. Just my recomendations. Good luck with it
