I've acquired a diesel tractor with a deafening exhaust noise. The muffler appears to be factory. What direction do I go in to quiet this bellering thing down, other than turning it off. Thanks.

This is a 100HP Fiat (Menard"s) that has had a cab added to it. The gear noise in road gear with drive you nuts all by itself. I"m pretty sure it has the old straight cut gears in it. It really is a pre-cab tractor. The exhaust tip is a little below head and it is curved. I look at it and think the darn thing is too small and the end is too low. The height I can fix with an extension. But should I just boost the current muffler or change it out. Going smaller doesn"t look pratical.

buy a set of ear muffs
Or else soon you will be like a lot of us oldtimers here, the loud noise won't bother you but your ears will ring all the time and you won't be able to hear the birds sing.

Dave

If you run the tractor long enough you may think you are getting used to the noise. You are NOT. you are losing your hearing if that happens. Another clue that the noise level is too high is if you hear a ringing in you ear after you are done running the equipment. If you can't lower the noise level, get hearing protection. Ear muffs or ear plugs. I like ear plugs for comfort. They also keep what little brains I have left from leaking out.

Is there a rain cap or a curved tip on that exhaust stack?

While the tractor may have a factory muffler on it the interior of the muffler may have rusted away and does little to dampen the noise.

A number of years ago I read of studys to electronically dampen noise from engines, etc.
An electronic unit would put out opposing frequency waves to virtually eliminate the sound produced. If I have stated it well enough it will make sense, otherwise think of the lines on an oscilloscope. When the unwanted noise peaked up, the counter noise device wave peaked down at the same level canceling out the actual sound.

A few thousand bucks for such a device and you might have the quietest tractor around.

They "inject" anti-phase harmonics into one of the chimneys (the steel one) at the local dust factory (cement works). They had to do it as sometimes (at variable distances and directions) it sounded like a helicopter landing nearby (very nearby!). Don"t know how well it would work on a tractor though.

Have a Ford 3 cyl. Muffler just fell off. Was doing some planting so finished planting. Was obnoxiously noisy as it was before the muffler fell off. Went to TSC and bought the longest fatest muffler I could find and installed it. Wasn't much better than the short open pipe (remnants of the one that fell off).

JD invented the Sound Guard Cab to help quiet entine noise but it doesn't. My 4230 at 100 hp, 6 cyl, with long oval muffler and small outlet pipe still makes a deafening noise in the cab and if you open the door look out.

I have been told that turbo equipped tractors are quieter. Have no turbo so don't know.

I use the little yellow ear plugs from Harbor Ft. Buy em by the gross. You squeeze them and roll them into a tight roll and stick them in your ear. They puff back up and seal your ear very well. You can hear the noise go away as they expand. Kinda neat.

Problem with plugs, is you can't hear machinery that tries to tell you when something is wrong and it's fixin to desintegrate.

Hi Dave,

Is it just the exhaust or is it the total engine noise that is bothering you?

Up above about 70 hp, the dudes cross the 80 db threshold and are just plain noisey. You'll need ear protectors to retain your sanity.

Allan

That's kinda what I was thinkin' also. I've spent a few hours on some of those compacts with the high-strung little diesels. There is very little actual exhaust noise, but everything else will drive you nuts after about 2 hours.

Dave: Without make and model, quite hard to give you advice. Most tractors will not be as offencive as yours with proper exhaust and mufler. Make sure that exhaust delivery point is above your head when seated on tractor. That makes a big difference. I have two tractors with same engine, one has proper mufler and the other a straight pipe. In both cases the exhaust delivery is above my head when on tractor seat. I notice very little difference in the two of them, unless I stand while operating.

There probably are a few exceptions to what I've said. One that imediately comes to mind are the tractors equiped with Detroit 2 cycle diesels, if mankind had been intended to listen to those, he would have been born with ear muffs or no ears at all.

Well, tell us what tractor you have first, maybe you have a unit that tends to be a little noiser then some other models. About my only advice is to get a new muffler, and if it still bothers you, wear ear muffs. If that dont do the trick, your sol:)
